Marie A. Toscano, 80, died Jan. 7, 2010, at her Anchorage home.

Marie has requested that a simple prayer service and visitation be held at 7 p.m. Monday at Legacy Funeral's Kehl's Chapel, 11621 Old Seward Highway and Klatt Road. Her ashes will be placed in the Columbarium at Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery.

Marie was born Dec. 17, 1929, in Providence, R.I., to Celia D'Arezzo and Emilio Toscano and lived in Rhode Island for the first 33 years of her life, working as a civil servant for the State before leaving in 1963.

For 13 years, from 1963-1976, she was a lay missionary for the Catholic Church. Then for 19 years, from 1977-1996, she operated the Montessori Children's House in Anchorage.

In 1993, Marie was honored by the YWCA as a Woman of Achievement in recognition of her years of service to the children of Bush Alaska as a lay missionary pre-school teacher.

She stated, "My greatest joy was working with children. Thanks to my students, their families, and all of my friends, you have enriched my life and I love you."

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Marie's name may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
