Martha Lydia Casas Cashen, 72, passed away peacefully on May 11, 2015, at Providence Medical Center in Anchorage, Alaska. She was surrounded by family, friends, prayers and music: all played an important role in her life. Born in Los Angeles, Calif., Marty or Ms. Cashen, as she was known to her friends and students, was a beloved educator whose teaching career spanned 50 years. Beginning at Royal Oak High School in Covina, Calif., she then taught Spanish for several years at Robert Service High School in Anchorage and the University of Alaska, Anchorage, from where she retired last year. She was an exceptional mentor and teacher who enhanced the learning of Spanish by involving and immersing her students in its culture through various multimedia approaches. Her classes were interesting and fun! Martha's other passion was for her Siberian huskies at Edenbrook Siberians. Along with her long-time friend and business partner, Betsy Randall, they bred and showed their Siberians, earning multiple championships in the United States, Canada, and Bermuda. When too ill to return home, the doctor's orders included a visit by Jaime, one of her twelve Siberians. It was a special moment. The highlight of Marta's summers were her participation in the Spanish Embassy programs developed to promote Spanish culture worldwide. She met and became fast friends with many of the participants and began walking the pilgrimage, El Camino de Santiago de Compostela. She walked each summer in the name of someone who was fighting cancer. Martha was predeceased by her daughter, Stephanie Kinter; her parents, Frank and Esperanza Casas; and her brother, Ernest Casas. She is survived by her sister, Olivia Casas of Carmel, Calif.; and her brother, Dr. Roberto Casas of Chino, Calif. Services will be held on Sunday, May 17, 2015, at 4 p.m. at Janssen's Evergreen Memorial Chapel, 737 E Street in Anchorage. The family suggests that contributions in Martha's memory be made to AARF Animal Rescue, 11801 Old Seward Highway, Anchorage, AK 99515; UAA Excellence in Languages Fund; or the Alaska Kennel Club, B. Randall 907-345-4402. Arrangements are with Janssen's Evergreen Memorial Chapel.
