Mary Kutney Obituary

Mary Kutney, 58, of Eagle River, Alaska, died on Wednesday, March 30, 2016, in her living room, listening to the metronome of her cuckoo clock, surrounded by family and friends. Born in Chicago, Ill., to John and Dorothy Hofbauer, she was the younger of two daughters. Mary attended St. John Fisher Elementary, Mother McCauley Liberal Arts High School and went on to earn her Bachelor of Nursing Degree from College of St. Theresa in Winona, Minn., graduating in 1980. She became a traveling nurse and zigzagged across the country on short term assignments including Honolulu, Boston, Los Angeles and Yellowstone National Park. Her family and friends often joined her on "mini" vacations wherever she went. She accepted three assignments to Alaska before settling here permanently in 1988. Mary began her career in the Great Land as an ICU Nurse at Humana Hospital, and went on to manage the Emergency Room, ICU, CCU and Air Ambulance programs. During her employment she established the Open Heart Program. In 1996, she was hired by the Department Of Veterans Affairs working as a Triage Nurse caring for our veterans. Feeling she could do more for them she enrolled in the "grow your own" program and went on to earn her Masters of Nursing from UAA in 2001, becoming a Family Nurse Practitioner. For the next 15 years she continued to provide compassionate quality care, managing a panel of over 1200 veterans. On June 9, 2001, she married her husband, Kenneth, and instantly became a wife, mother and grandmother. She is preceded in death by her mother, Dorothy; father, John; mother-in-law, Rose; father-in-law, James; and sister-in-law, Virginia Lynn Kutney. She is survived by her husband, Kenneth J. Kutney; stepsons, Ian and Beau Kutney; sister, Carol Neth (Kenneth); step-grandsons, Quintin, Elijah, Orion, Myles and Aiden; along with numerous other beloved family members. A Mass of Catholic Burial will be conducted by Fr. Arthur Roraff on Wednesday, April 6, 2016, at 6 p.m., at St. Andrew Catholic Church, 16300 Domain Lane in Eagle River. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. Jude Children's Hospital in memory of Mary Hofbauer-Kutney; 1-800-873-6983 or StJude.org/tributes to select a memorial card. Arrangements are with Janssen's Eagle River Funeral Home.

I was a patient of Mary's for many years after I retired from the Air Force. She was a very special lady and always had a smile on her face regardless of how her day way going. I learned of her illness the last time I was at the VA and they had transfered my name to another PA. It sorrows me to learn of her passing but glad to know heaven has a special angel. RIP

Goodbye Mary. Of all the times I went to the VA and was assigned to you many years ago, I was absolutely dumbfounded as to how they were able to keep you. Simply put, you were the best person for my health and heart. My condolences to your family and friends and please know Mary will be remembered by a lot of us as a rare treasure and good human being.

A Mary story- several of us were traveling nurses in Salt Lake City, we were all on a diet and would take turns cooking dinner for each other before our night shifts. The night it was Mary's turn she made the best green beans and we gobbled them up. After dinner she realized she had covered them with frosting instead of diet margarine. We laughed til we were sick, I don't think any of us lost weight that week. Mary taught me how to fish for halibut. Mary took me camping to fish for Reds. Mary introduced me to her wonderful friends Peg and Dave in Anchorage. I will really miss her, there was no one like her. She would have loved reading all these tributes, especially those from her patients. Bye my friend.

I have never met a harder worker than Mary. Always busy but never too busy to share a story or listen. Working with her at the V A was a true privilege and I know for a fact her veterans adored her. Many shared stories like "I wouldn't be alive if Mary had not been there for me." When she got her transplant, I was certain she would live life in ease. However, all I can figure is god needed a special angel! Our loss. Miss your smile and your laugh Mary. God bless you and yours. Wanda Sutterer

To The Family, Please accept my condolences. Mary was my Primary Care Giver since 2002, she pushed me, cured me and took care of me like the true professional she was. Not being above a joke if i had one she could come back with some great ones. I don't think time mattered because she always be running behind because she was taking care of her people. Thank you, Mary and may you rest in peace knowing yes, you did make a difference in a lot of lives.
