Mattie Ruth Reed-Powell, 83, of Ellenwood, Ga., passed away on Aug. 4, 2017.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. at West Side Community CME Church in Atlanta, Ga. Rev. Carlton Mahone of St. Paul CME will be officiating. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. - 8 p.m. at Tri-Cities Funeral Home in Lithonia, Ga.
Mattie was born in Scotland Neck, N.C., on Aug. 9, 1933, to Jesse "James" Reed and Hattie Reed. She graduated from Baltimore's historic Douglass High School and continued her education by attending The Cortez Peters Typing Institute. Mattie was married to Melvin B. Powell on April 22, 1967, they were married for 25 years. Mattie worked as a Secretary for John Hopkins Hospital for 12 years, and retired in Anchorage, Alaska, from ATU. She loved her church and enjoyed serving at First CME in Anchorage, for over 20 years.
Mattie enjoyed reading the newspaper cover to cover every day. Mattie loved to shop and had the finest of clothes. She was very active in the community and a Charter Member of the Business Professional Women Organization for over 25 years, where she served in several capacities. A Charter Member of The Links, and NAACP.
Mattie is survived by daughters, Robbin Purvis and Vonnie Gaither; grandchildren, Tre' Gaither (Jessica), Toi Registe (Davey) Lawrence Rutherford (Amber), Artaveous Purvis and Sasha Purvis-Gaines (Chuck); sibling, Mamie "Springtime" Reed-Edwards; grandchildren, Artaveous (AJ) Purvis, Tierra Rutherford, Taniyah Rutherford, Zaden Registe, Zachariah Registe, Geila Brown, Corias Brown, Aysha Asalee Purvis, Xavier Purvis, Ra'Quan Gaines, DaSean Gaines and Gabrielle "Gabby" Gaines; and a host of nieces and nephews, and other family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to The Potter's House Ministry at 2776 Rex Road, Ellenwood, GA 30294.
