Lifelong Alaska resident Mr. Michael Eckenberg, 60, passed away at home in Seward, Alaska, on Aug. 14, 2017, due to complications from cancer.
Funeral services will be held at the Anchorage Funeral Home & Crematory, 1800 Dare Avenue, Anchorage, AK 99515, on Monday, Sept. 18, 2017, from noon until 2 p.m.
Michael was born on Dec., 11, 1956, in Kodiak, Alaska, to George and Molly Eckenberg. After completing high school, Michael lived/worked in Farmington, N.M.; Happy Valley, Alaska; and finally settling in Seward, Alaska. Mike spent several years fishing for scallops and salmon. He enjoyed his work and was good at it. He was well known in the fishing community as an excellent deckhand, the kind you felt safe with, and was one of the best skiffmen out of three. Unfortunately, in 2000, arthritis and fibromyalgia forced him to quit working and he became disabled.
Michael enjoyed subsistence hunting, sport fishing, mending nets, carving beautiful art works and playing cribbage, poker and Yahtzee. Mike's family knew him as a: "generous person with a kind heart and a wonderful sense of humor. He could make anyone smile. His door was always open to help anyone in need. He loved his family and the ocean, but his greatest pride and joy was his daughter, Melanya, and his son, Cliffard. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him."
Michael was preceded in death by his father, George Ercel Eckenberg; mother, Molly Eckenberg Pearson; brother, Jack Alexander Nevzeroff; and sister, Nora Mae Eckenberg.
He is survived by his wife, Lubova Kochergin of St. Paul, Alaska; brothers, George Eckenberg of Anchorage, Alaska, and William Eckenberg of Seward; sisters, Georgia Eckenberg of Anchorage and Nancy Weeks, of Greenboro, N.C.; son, Cliffard Eckenberg of Klamath Falls, Ore.; daughter, Melanya Fitzgibbon of Puyallup, Wash.; grandchildren, Kristian Eckenberg, Topher Parhomski, Talia and Neala Owens of Puyallup, Wash.; and cousin, Nancy Olsen Depew of Arvada, Colo.
Arrangements were made by the Anchorage Funeral Home and Crematory. Please visit Michael's online obituary and guest book at Alaskanfuneral.com.
