On Dec. 1, 2015, Michael "MJ" Joseph Chalender, a kind-hearted soul passed away in his home, at the young age of 22. His life began on July 18, 1993, in Palmer, Alaska, the son of Dale Chalender and Barbara Weiland. He loved following his dad around as a child, doing whatever his dad did. Growing up he lovingly owned a menagerie of animals, played a wide variety of sports, skateboarded and enjoyed Alaskan activities like fishing, camping, snowboarding and combat sledding. He never lacked for friends and family. As a teen, his hobbies grew to include boating, off-roading, frolf and cooking. One of his favorite activities as a young adult was playing video and board games with his siblings and friends. He earned his GED with top scores. Michael held several positions and was known to be a hard worker. On the day he passed, he was excited about getting back to work and spending time with his friends and family. Michael is preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Robert R. Chalender. The family left behind includes his parents, Dale and Kris Chalender and Barbara and John Weiland; as well as his siblings, Yoshi Okamoto, Yoshiko Flanagan, Tamara Dodds, Melissa Valone and Joshua Wiertsema; his nephew, Ronan Flanagan; and niece, Adalyn Okamoto; grandmother, Betty Chalender; as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins in the Lower 48. A private funeral will be held at a later date. Arrangements are with Janssen's Eagle River Funeral Home.
