Michael Smith, 60, passed away in Anchorage after a sudden illness. He was tended to by his loving wife Heidi in his final moments. A celebration of his life will be held at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Anchorage on Saturday, March 2, 2013 from noon to 2:30 p.m.
Born on September 19, 1952 to Phyllis Whitfield in Texas, Michael was one of 6 children who loved the desert life. He spent his formative years in Arizona and Alaska, where he showed a passion for the outdoors and flying. He later served in the Coast Guard.
Michael found his career calling in business after receiving a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration: Accounting from University of Arizona-Tucson in 1979, a Master's in Business Administration from University of Alaska Anchorage in 1993, and his CPA license for the state of Alaska in 1984. He loved to teach business, help others with their business aspirations, and create his own enterprises that ranged from publishing to public speaking to ethics.
In 1996, Michael married his soul mate Heidi Hitchings who shared his passion for the outdoors and family, and together they produced two wonderful children, Morgan (14) and Bianca (12), who Michael spoke about with pride and joy to everyone he knew. Michael's overriding desire to "do the right thing" in life touched all who knew him and will endure forever.
Michael is survived by his wife Heidi Smith, son Morgan, and daughter Bianca of Anchorage; from previous life families: daughters Kristine Mellon and Stephanie Kinsey, sons Travis, Ryan and Taylor Smith, siblings Chad, Debi, Michael, Toni, and Jeri and many nieces and nephews across the country. Michael was preceded in passing by father and mother, Bruce and Phyllis Miller.
In lieu of flowers, friends and family have established an account at Credit Union One to assist with expenses. Cremation services handled by Cremation Society of Alaska.
