Former Alaska resident Michelle Raylene (Stearns) Ring, 26, was killed July 5, 2007, by mortar fire while on guard duty in Baghdad, Iraq.
A local memorial gathering will be at 8 p.m. Aug. 3 at Point Woronzof.
She was born July 2, 1981, in Portland, Ore., to John and Shirley Stearns. She was the youngest of three girls and grew up in McMinnville, Ore., and Kentucky before moving with her family to Alaska in the 1990s.
Her family wrote: "She loved the outdoors and was never afraid to try something new or challenging. She joined the Army to better her life and the lives of her two boys, whom she thought the world of. She was proud to serve her country and had just re-enlisted to continue serving our country. Her family and friends are all proud of her accomplishments in and out of the Army. She was a friend to all and will be forever missed.
"We are at peace knowing that she is with many loving family members and friends in heaven and will be waiting there for us."
She is survived by her parents, John and Shirley Stearns of Oregon; her sisters, Karen of Alaska and Marilyn of Oregon; and her two boys, Marc and Brandon.
