Mika Uchida, 47, died April 16, 2010, in Anchorage.

A child-friendly, child-led celebration will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hatcher Pass Lodge. All friends and supporters of Mika are welcome. Her ashes will be scattered over Resurrection Bay.

She was born May 7, 1962, in Japan.

Her friends and family wrote: "Our dear friend, teacher, wife, mother, daughter and community member passed on recently. She spent her last 16 years lovingly teaching children to speak and read Japanese.

"She first arrived in Seward from Japan and met her husband there.

"Mika wasn't afraid to help children develop character and honor. For that, the world is a better place.

Her sense of humor and love for children is woven through many lives, and our community has lost a powerful force for the education of young people."

Mika's husband, Todd, wishes to thank the community for the support over these last few tough months.

Mika is survived by her husband, Todd Hughes; and 5-year-old son, Luke Hughes here in Alaska. Her parents, Yoko and Motoki Uchida, and brother, Hiroki Uchida, live in Japan but hope to visit Alaska this summer to meet all her friends. A reception will be held at that time.
