Myrtle Marie Bearden died peacefully in her sleep, at home, on Aug. 2, 2018, at the age of 86. She was born on Aug. 10, 1931, in Tippah, Miss., during the Great Depression.
She met the love of her life, Earl L. Bearden, while he was in the Army, they were pen pals. In September of 1951 they were married. Her husband was transferred to Ft. Richardson in Alaska and she followed in October of 1952. They lived shortly in Anchorage, Alaska, and then later moved to Chugiak, Alaska, on Birchwood Loop Road in 1953.
She quickly became a true Alaskan woman helping her husband clear brush and trudging through the snow to chop wood for their wood stove. Life was hard but rewarding. She had given birth to three children by the end of 1955. To house the growing family, they built their own home on Birchwood Loop Road. In the 1960s, Marie, as she was known by, joined the Chugiak Homemakers Club and made friends who stayed with her throughout life. Later, in 1968 she went to work for the School District and was the lunch lady at Chugiak Jr./Senior High School, working there until she retired. Marie loved her flower gardens and fishing, but above all else, she loved God and her family and we loved her and will miss her dearly.
Marie is survived by her sister, Violet Davis; her daughter, Debra Bearden; her husband, Chris Willhoite; son, Richard Bearden and his wife Christine Bearden; grandchildren, Jennifer Holsclaw, Shawn Sexton, Casey Sexton, Sarah Paulus, Pamela Lyons, Christy Belsky, David Bearden, Nichole Bearden, Jake Bearden; eleven great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and also her best friend, Shirley Margeson.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John E. Hawkins and Ethel M. Hawkins; sister, Millie Warren; infant son, Steven Bearden; husband, Earl L. Bearden; and grandson, Brian Sexton.
Services will be held at the Nazarene church in Eagle River, Alaska, at 10 a.m. on Aug.14, 2018. Burial will follow at Fort Richardson cemetery on Aug.14, 2018, at 2:30 p.m.
