Nils Hviid, 76, of Eagle River, Alaska, passed away surrounded by family on Sunday, Sept. 3, 2017. Nils was born on Nov. 13, 1940, in Riga, Latvia, to Gerhard and Emily (Jurkstas) Hviid. He immigrated to the United States with his mother in 1949. After joining the United States Army in 1959, Nils trained as a medic and graduated from Baylor University in 1976 as a physician assistant. He served in Vietnam and completed three tours in Germany before retiring from the military in 1985. He then worked as a physician assistant for the State of Alaska Department of Corrections.
Nils moved to Alaska in 1982, and reveled in the natural beauty of the state. An avid outdoorsman, he especially loved fishing and hunting. Known for his hospitality and generosity, he enjoyed hosting parties at his home in Eagle River and sharing his Kenai River cabin with friends and family. He traveled extensively, including a trip to Asia and two visits to Africa. Nils was an enthusiastic cook and always sought to perfect his salmon smoking and sausage-making techniques. He was an active member of the VFW Post 9785 in Eagle River.
Nils was preceded in death by his parents; aunts, Anna Kurtius and Pauline Shanasarian; and his beloved cousin, Aina Stamer.
Survivors include his daughter, Susan Hviid of Eagle River; son, Nils Hviid and his wife Cathy of Anchorage, Alaska; granddaughter, Tara Shea and her husband Brian of Anchorage; grandson, Michael Hviid and his wife Savannah of Anchorage; great-grandchildren, River, Watson and Luke Hviid of Anchorage; and numerous extended family members.
A celebration of life will be held at the VFW Post 9785 in Eagle River on Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2017, at 6 p.m. The family extends special thanks to the staff and doctors of the 673rd Medical Group at JBER Hospital.
