Rebecca Amarok was born to John and Theresa Katungazoc, and was raised on King Island and in Nome, Alaska, until 1961. She attended Chemawa High School with her cousin, Olga Kingston, and Bertha Koyuk. She gradually moved to Anchorage, Alaska, in 1963, where she met and married William J. Safrit on June 12, 1965. They moved to Fort Hood, Texas, where daughter, Barbara Ann Safrit, was born. Mr. Safrit was in the U.S. Army, and was killed in the Vietnam War in 1967.
Returning to Anchorage, Rebecca was employed at Elmendorf Air Force Base and part time as a teacher's aide at Denali Elementary School. She met and married Joseph Amarok on April 23, 1981. The family traveled many places and enjoyed the outdoors: berry picking, fishing, clam digging and gardening. Rebecca made beautiful handmade articles, sealskin slippers with colored bead designs and warm mukluks. She loved to be in company of family and friends enjoying her native foods and loving her great-grandchildren, Tristen and Aleeya Grace.
Rebecca leaves behind her husband, Joe; daughter, Barbara; grandkids, Jason, Alyssa, Rhiannon, William, Joe, Meranda and Brandon; and great-grandchildren, Tristen and Aleeya Grace.
