Robert Allen Garrett (1927 - 2018)

The Guest Book is expired.

Robert Allen "Bob" Garrett passed away peacefully on Saturday, Feb. 3, 2018, at the age of 90. He was the seventh and youngest child of Clark and Cora Garrett of Le Grand, Iowa, and was raised on various farms in and around Toledo/Tama, Iowa. He enlisted in 1946, and served with the Army Air Corps in Greenland and Labrador, and with the U.S. Air Force Reserve until 1960. He returned to Iowa, but after meeting and marrying his wife, Dorothy Mae Dravis, a school teacher, he left farming, pumping gas and shoveling seed corn to become an Air Traffic Controller with the Federal Aviation Administration. He and Dorothy moved to Danville, outside Indianapolis, Ind., where their three children were born. In 1965, he accepted an assignment to Anchorage, Alaska. They stayed for 35 years raising their children.
Bob never knew a stranger. He lived a life of service. The Garrett home was open to anyone needing a warm meal, a song, a game of cards, a bad pun or a bed to sleep in. Over the years they hosted musicians, artists, dancers, exchange students, baseball players and countless friends and family. Bob retired from the Air Traffic Control in 1985, but never slowed down. He loved woodworking, traveling and the Cubbies. Together with his wife Dorothy, he was a faithful member, usher and active volunteer at Central Lutheran in Anchorage. They were happily married 45 years, until her death in 2003.
Bob is preceded in death by his parents, Clark and Cora; his wife, Dorothy; his three brothers; three sisters; and three nephews. He leaves his three children, Tom (Stacy) of Kansas City, Mo., Anne of Anchorage and Dan (Kristi) of Des Moines, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Jon Garrett of St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands, Megan (Scott) Pearson of Newton, Iowa, Sebastian Garrett-Singh of Anchorage, Emily Garrett of Kansas City, Mo., Kieran Garrett-Singh and Gabriel Garrett-Singh of Bellevue, Wash., and Harrison Eckard-Garrett of Des Moines, Iowa; and his great-grandson, Hayes Robert Pearson of Newton, Iowa. He leaves his second wife, Lu; and several nieces and nephews, Carol and Sharon, Jody, Larry, Susan and Tom, Elaine and Robert, Gail, Richard and Mary, John, Jacque, Deborah, Clark and William and Mike.
The family appreciates all the love, acts of service and prayers.
