Roderick Bain Obituary

Long-time Alaskan Roderick G. Bain, 91, died peacefully at home in Anchorage on February 5, 2014. Mr. Bain was born May 13, 1922, in Portland, Oregon to Roderick M. and Sophie Bain. He was raised in Long Beach, Washington, graduating from Illwaco High School in 1940. He was in his freshman year at the University of Washington in Seattle when the attack on Pearl Harbor occurred, and he enlisted the following summer at Fort Lewis, Washington. He volunteered for the 101st Airborne Division, and trained for two years with Easy Company, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment before making combat parachute jumps into Normandy and Holland, and surviving the Battle of the Bulge in Bastogne, Belgium.

When the war ended, Mr. Bain continued his education at Western Washington Teacher's College (now Western Washington University) and commercially fished during the summers in Ketchikan, Alaska with the Cunningham family. After graduation, he married his classmate, Donelle Mosier. The newlyweds took a steamship to the Territory of Alaska in 1951, where they taught school in Kake, Petersburg, and Anchorage. Mr. Bain taught sixth grade at North Star, Inlet View, and O'Malley, retiring from the Anchorage School District in 1976. Each summer, from 1965, he skippered his own drift gillnetter in Bristol Bay, finally retiring in 1997 at age 75.

Surprising him in retirement was the fame that came to his Airborne unit when HBO produced the 10-part mini-series "Band of Brothers," based on the Stephen Ambrose book of the same name. Mr. Bain travelled with his family to Paris in 2001 for the HBO world premiere, and spent his remaining years travelling with his war buddies to visit today's generation of soldiers on morale tours and in hospitals. Last spring he was made the honorary First Sergeant of Bravo Company, 1st Battalion (Airborne) 143rd Infantry Regiment. Although he was a decorated veteran and Bronze Star recipient, Mr. Bain was most proud of his 157-yard Hole in One Award from Moose Run golf course. Cognizant to the end, he died reassured that his Seattle Seahawks had won their first Super Bowl championship.

His survivors include his wife of 63 years, Donelle, their daughters Ella (Fred) Eaton, Ann (Bruce) Winegarden, and Donna Bain; his sister Janet Bain Jacobson; and grandchildren Thomas Winegarden, Douglas Winegarden, Tiana Farquhar, and Roderick Farquhar; as well as many loving nieces, nephews and friends. He is preceded in death by his sister Jeriann Peterson, brother Glenn Spriggs, and by his sons Roy Ellison Bain and Alan Lee Bain.

Graveside interment with full military honors will be conducted on Ft. Richardson February 13, 2014 at 11:30 a.m. Memorial service and reception will follow at 2 p.m. at First Congregational Church, 2610 East Northern Lights Blvd.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Hospice of Anchorage or the UAA Blueliners Booster Club.

Mr. Bain was so incredibly kind and a wonderful story teller. He and his wife and family will always hold a special place in our hearts. He was such a good man and we remember his gentle soul quite frequently in the Toye household.

Mr. Bain had some great stories about my father and many of his other "Brothers"---all humorous of course. Like so many of them, he probably kept "the hell" pretty much to himself. One of my favorite Mr. Bain great lines was when he was guest of honor at a banquet preceding the annual college basketball tournament in Anchorage. After being introduced, he said, "I'm proof that white men can jump!" He brought the place down...It was a great honor, though ever so fleeting, for my wife Laurie and me to have gotten to meet him, and his wonderful family. Such humble heroes can never possibly be forgotten!

My father and I sailed along side Rod and the Donelle B for almost thirty years. A quiet, humble and kind soul. I remember well some moments in Bristol Bay that I can say with all my heart that I was proud to be a friend of Mr. Rod Bain. He spoke little of his WWII service, but we all knew of his service as he described to me personally as "A Nightmare." We continued our friendship for years as we both retired from the fishing industry, but never forgot the good times. I was shocked when we lost Alan But again always remembered the good times. My Dad and Rod would have tea together and talk fishing. I would call Rod from time to time over the years to thank him for his friendship, his service to this great Nation and thank him for the freedom that I enjoy today. Rod is and will always hold a dear spot in my heart as a friend, and mentor. May God bless his soul as he has mine to have known a truly great man.

April 5, 2015

I first met Rod in Dillingham, Alaska in the early eighties. As my own father and I were commercial fishermen as well. I remember his gentle demeanor and general kindness. He became a great friend for over thirties years. I remember him coming to our boat and having tea with my father. I would call periodically to thank him for his service to our country and thank him personally for my freedom. He was quietly a great man and is and will be truly missed. God bless his soul.

I was only able to spend a short time with Mr. Bain. I fished a summer on the Donelle B with Alan and Mr. Bain went out on a king opener with us. I was also able to attend my grandfathers birthday the same year and Mr. an Mrs. Bain were in attendance. I only know the incredible admiration and respect that Allen and my family had for Mr. Bain. He gave me a something to strive for. He showed me that we can be better than ourselves.
You will be missed Mr. Bain.

And also catching up on a lot of lost time with his "Brother", my dad and the many others whom have passed before him. Take care and know many share your grief at this moment.

Mr. Bain was my sixth grade teacher at Inlet View Elem. in 1967. For some reason, I have strong and good memories of him (although he seemed quite exasperated with us). He was a kind man, and kind to me. My condolences to his family, and my thanks for his service, as both a soldier and a teacher, to our country!

He did tell a few stories about his buddies in the war but I was surprised to learn that he was one of the "Band of Brothers". A humble, kind man, he certainly deserved the fame and travel that came from that. Donelle, children and families - may your memories sustain and comfort you. God bless. -

I had Mr. Bain for may 6th grade teacher at North Star in the early 60's. He is the teacher I remember the most. He showed WW2 news reels about once a week in class which I loved. One day after a movie he told me how good a shot the Germans were. I remember thinking how much action had he seen, now I know after 50 years. He took the class on tv to be on the buckarue club. He was very involved with our class. The world lost a great man.

Farewell to one of the best teachers I had growing up in Petersburg, Alaska. MR. Bain taught 7th grade in 1960 in Petersburg. The only time Roderick got upset with me was when my pet crow followed me to school and got into our classroom at lunch and took all of Rodericks pencils off his desk and put them up on the overhead lights. Great teacher and Veteran. Roger Pederson
