Roger Steven Nelsen, 55, a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed away on July 26, 2017. He was dipnetting on the Copper River when he suffered an unexpected heart attack.
Funeral Services for Roger will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2017, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Brayton Chapel, 13111 Brayton Drive in Anchorage, Alaska. A viewing and visitation will begin at 10 a.m., with services beginning at 11 a.m., and a reception for friends and family at noon. Roger will be buried in a private family ceremony at the Fort Richardson National cemetery at a later date.
Born on Dec. 4, 1961, in Ritzville, Wash., to Richard and Linda Nelsen, Roger graduated from Garland High School in Texas, joined the U.S. Army and served as a medic, and obtained a degree from Knapp Business College in Tacoma, Wash., before entering into his lifelong trade as a floorcovering contractor, manager and estimator.
Roger was a gracious and generous host and loved to cook and care for family and friends. No matter what the occasion, he was always the first person to call and he never hesitated to go the extra mile, regardless of the cost. He worked hard in everything he undertook, and he taught his children to do likewise.
A consummate Alaskan, Roger loved fishing, firearms, fourwheelers, camping and hiking, and always made sure to bring others along for the fun. He also maintained a lifelong interest in sports and spent time as a football, baseball, golf and track athlete. His deep interest in cheesy sci-fi movies was a source of embarrassment to his family right up to the very end. Roger touched so many lives and will be greatly missed.
Roger is survived by his wife, Kimberly; his father, Richard Nelsen; his sister, Stephanie; his children, Roger Jr., Brooklyn, Noah, Alek, Trevor and Jenna; and his grandchildren, Braxton, Cash and Elizabeth. He is preceded in death by his mother, Linda.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Anchorage Funeral Home. Friends are invited to visit Roger's online obituary and guestbook at
