Samuel Phillip "Sam" Glass, 53, died at his home in Anchorage, Alaska, on August 26, 2013, from complications of lung cancer stemming from his Naval career. A Celebration of Life is scheduled for Saturday, August 31, at 10:00 a.m. at the Anchorage First United Methodist Church, 9th & G, and a second Celebration of Life is scheduled at the John Day, Oregon, United Methodist Church on Saturday, September 14 at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow at a future date at the Fort Richardson National Cemetery.

Born on July 22, 1960, in John Day, Oregon, to Gordon and Lura Glass, Sam left John Day at the beginning of his junior year of high school, moving to California to swim year round with the De Anza Swim Club, graduating from Saratoga High School in 1978 as an All American in swimming. He then accepted a scholarship in swimming with the University of Oregon, thus beginning a lifelong dedication to his beloved Oregon Ducks. Following his time at Oregon, he served in the Navy for 6 years, mostly on nuclear submarines in the North Pacific.

Sam lived life to the fullest throughout his entire life, especially during his 4-year battle with non-small cell lung cancer. He continued to do so up until the last couple of months of his life, accomplishing many things and visiting more places in 5 years in Alaska with Dara than most people who live in Alaska all their lives.

Survivors include his wife, Dara of Anchorage; daughters, Nicole and Helen of Alexandria, Virginia; son, Alex of Alexandria, Virginia; mother, Lura Glass of Glendale, Arizona; sister, Julie Glass of Sun City, Arizona; sister, Gina Glass and Mitch Rutledge of Pomona, California; in-laws, Karl and Donella Evans of Yachats, Oregon; Kreg Evans of Yachats, Oregon; Dacia and Barry Conoyer of Mesa, Arizona; D'Arcy Evans of LaCrosse, Wisconsin; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Sam was preceded in death by his father, Gordon Glass.

Donations may be made to the Municipality of Anchorage Animal Shelter, Attn: Treasury, P.O. Box 196650, Anchorage, Alaska 99519.
