Mickey Sandra Duane Riley Belden, 70, died July 1, 2009, in Gloria's Golden Heart Assisted Living, in Anchorage after suffering from a brain tumor. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at UAA Fine Arts Building, Music Recital Hall with the Rev. Norman H.V. Elliott officiating. She will be inurned at Anchorage Memorial Park Columbarium at a later date. Mrs. Belden was born Nov. 27, 1938, in Belleville, Kan., to the late William Orville and Mildred Irene Harding Riley. In 1956, she graduated from Belleville High School and went on to Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kan., where she graduated with a Bachelor of Music in voice in 1960 and a Bachelor of Music in education in 1961. Mrs. Belden received a Master of Education in adult education from the University of Alaska Anchorage in 1999. From 1960-1973, Mrs. Belden was a music teacher in the Kansas Public School and then went on to be a records clerk at the University of North Texas, Denton, from 1973-1978. Then in 1978 she and her family moved to Anchorage, where she worked at Anchorage Community College and University of Alaska Anchorage from 1978-1992 as a records clerk. She was also instructor of voice at ACC and UAA from 1980-2009. Mickey was past president of Anchorage Chapter of National Association of Teachers of Singing, and a member of Col. John Mitchell Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution. Her family states, "Mickey was a wonderful singer, inspired teacher to countless students, a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, and true friend. She took passionate interest in music, the arts and education. She was a voracious reader and water aerobics fanatic. We'll miss her wry humor and her open approach to the people she met and to the challenges and opportunities she encountered." She is survived by her husband, George Ross Belden; sons, Steven Ross (Rhea Richmond) Belden of Ninilchick and David George (Mary-Terese Cozzola) Belden of Chicago; grandchildren, Anneliese Mazatlana, Severn Rhead, and Esme Hedera Belmond, all of Ninilchick; aunt, Betty Ann Cwik of Elk Grove Village, Ill. Dear Dave,

I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I am still not understanding life in some respects after losing my Dad. Your mom sounds like such a beautiful person - rich in talents, love and relationships. She led a life of beauty and love. And she had the beautiful blessing of seeing her son as a man - also so rich in talent, love and friendships - she must have been so proud of you!
It is the worlds loss when we lose a beautiful kind person. But I can't help but feel that they become magnified in us as we keep them close in our hearts...

Best to you and your family,

Jory

I regret that I never got to know Sandra's family. I had the great privilege of being her accompanist when we were in high school, and it still feels like one of the great privileges of my life. Her voice was one of my richest experiences. I am grateful to all of you who loved her in the years after she and I were no longer in touch.

Dear Dr. George - I was so sorry to hear of Micky's passing. I enjoyed so much being her voice student and class accompanist - and her friend. She was a delight. I will miss her. God's blessings on you. Brenda Tuttle (Crozet, VA)

Dear George, Steve, and David,
I am so sorry to learn of the death of Mickey. The world has definitely lost a wonderful, warm, and talented lady. I can't believe it.

I will never forget the twinkle in her eye and her great sense of humor. She was always a "happy camper"--a little term we often used in conversation.

I am sorry I did not know she was ill.

Please know my thoughts and prayers are with you. She is missed by many.
With deep sympathy and my love to you,
Jay Jackson

I had the priviledge of meeting Micky in the pool at water aerobics. She had such a good attitude and was fun to exercise with. Once when I saw her at the Performing Arts Center we joked about "not recogonizing each other with our clothes on". She was a great and gracious lady and will be misssed

Micky was my first vocal coach in college (in 1998) and her love of jazz inspired me and changed the direction of my life. I am grateful to have known her.

My deepest sympathy and warm regards to the family at this time. My memories of Mickey are quick smiles and funny conversations as we crossed paths many times on the ACC and UAA campuses from 1984 to 1998. She always had a kind word of praise or encouragement during my involvement with the greater Anchorage arts community.
Special regards to Steve who I worked with and enjoyed knowing very much during my years in Anchorage.

George, you have my deepest sympathy in the death of Mickey. Having worked with her in many areas of ACC and UAA, I consider her a good friend. I was in a couple of her music classes. My prayers are with you and your families.

Of my six years in the UAA music program, my only memories surrounding Mickey is of her sincere care of her students, her sense of humor and undeniable love of life and music. Wherever she was, everyone around was better for it.

I will never forget having the few opportunities to listen to her perform; she was a true performer. One couldn't help but be drawn and pulled in to the powerful magic of her dynamic stage presence and remarkably dark and warm voice. The effect was intoxicating, and I could never help but to smile and simply enjoy and be thankful for the moment.

UAA Music will never be the same...

Dr. Belden and his family have my thoughts and prayers.

"In paradisum deducant te Angeli; in tuo adventu suscipiant te martyres, et perducant te in civitatem sanctam Ierusalem. Chorus angelorum te suscipiat, et cum Lazaro quondam paupere æternam habeas requiem."

"Requiem æternam dona eis, Domine; et lux perpetua luceat eis."

"May angels lead you into Paradise; may the martyrs receive you at your coming and lead you to the holy city of Jerusalem. May a choir of angels receive you, and with Lazarus, who once was poor, may you have eternal rest."

"Grant them eternal rest, O Lord, and may everlasting light shine upon them."
