Sarah was a beautiful person, inside and out. As a senior, she was voted Most Beautiful Smile in her class. She played basketball, tennis, girls' hockey, flag football and softball for the Chugiak High School Mustangs. She was a very active young woman and a great team player, always known for her sportsmanship and great physical abilities. Sarah excelled in school, earning excellent grades and impressing all she worked under with her work ethic and intelligence. She was a talented artist and painted a beautiful picture for her mother. At home, Sarah was a loving big sister to her younger siblings, Stephen and Julia and she loved helping them with sports and school work.
Sarah was exceptionally caring and big-hearted, giving out love to all her friends and family. One year she gave the gift of a puzzle to her family. She called the puzzle "Family and Love." Each puzzle piece had her family members name on it, Mom, Dad, Julia, Stephen and Sarah. Included in her puzzle with this quote, "I made this present because we all fit together like a puzzle, but even though we are still different we still love and care for each other. I love you guys." Her favorite music was hip hop. Sarah had a beautiful voice, memorable even after the cancer took it from her. Sarah had a huge heart for animals. She loved her dogs Jackson "Jay Jay" and Daisy. Jackson was very special to Sarah, and he was given to her as a gift by Marty Goldberg. Jackson was her companion dog in her battle with brain cancer and he brought much joy to her. Sarah was diagnosed her senior year, and fought hard. Many admired Sarah for her fight and how she battled for her life. She fought her cancer surrounded by loving family, with a strong belief in the power of the Lord to help her with her struggle. Sarah never lost her hope, with her beautiful personality shining throughout her precious life. She possessed an amazing sense of style, humor, and taste for life, always willing to try something new and treasuring every moment. Sarah was known for her sense of style, especially her high heels.
Sarah leaves a hole in her family that will be felt forever. She leaves behind her parents Julius and Edna Matthew; Brother Stephen and Sister Julia; as well as the Matthew family in Fairbanks and the Palmer family in Anchorage and Washington.
We are thankful that Sarah's pain and suffering is no more. We love you Sarah. A Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday, January 26, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. in Eagle River at Community Covenant.
