Sibyl Marie Moor Gentle passed away on March 15, 2018, in Mansfield, Texas. She lived in Anchorage and Wasilla, Alaska, for more than 45 years, but left 10 years ago to be closer to family.
Sibyl was born on June 12, 1921, in Birmingham, Ala., the second of seven children. She was preceded in death by husband, Clarence; son, Russ; and siblings, Claire, Carol, Ann and Clifton. She is survived by her brother and sister, Roy and Joy; her son, Dale of Concord, N.C.; daughter, Gay Rodriguez of Arlington, Texas; grandchildren, Jim Gentle of Everett, Wash., Christina Cruz of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Monica Bridgewater of Mansfield, Texas; and great-grandchildren, Tiesen, Zoie, Ethan, Aubrey, Nathan and Alexandra.
Shortly after they married in 1941, Clarence enlisted in the Army Air Corp. and Sibyl followed him as he trained to be a flight engineer on a B-24 bomber. Russ was born shortly after Clarence returned from the war. Following Clarence in his military career, Sibyl lived in the Panama Canal Zone, England, and Missouri before he transitioned to a new military career in meteorology that brought them to Elmendorf Air Force Base in 1961.
In 1976, they moved from Anchorage to Wasilla, to a new home that replaced a weekend cabin, and never considered living anywhere else. Sibyl tired of salmon, wouldn't eat game meat and only wanted to camp from a trailer, but Alaska was home.
She never forgot Clarence, and had a verse taped to a picture of him that said: "Those we love don't go away, they walk beside us every day. Unseen, unheard, but always near, still loved, still missed and very dear." Those are words her family will hold close to their hearts.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, May 21, 2018, at 9:30 a.m., in the chapel at Anchorage Funeral Home, 1800 Dare Avenue. Sibyl will be buried with Clarence in the Fort Richardson National Cemetery.
