Longtime Alaskan Sue Vanden Berg passed away peacefully in her home in Corrales, N.M., her beloved sons beside her. Sue was the youngest of three daughters born to Mike (Marco) and Imogene Pavich in Roundup, Mont., and lived in Klein, Mont. Sue graduated from Roundup High School in 1964, and soon after ventured to Alaska with her parents, arriving shortly after the infamous '64 earthquake. She met Jack Vanden Berg while working at Wien Airlines and married in 1965. They raised their two sons together in Anchorage and Girdwood, Alaska. She retired from GCI in 2009, and moved to Corrales, N.M., with her partner, Bill Hines. Sue was notably hospitable and opened her home to anyone in need, had passions for gardening and genealogy research, volunteered in the ski racing community for decades, had a knack with computers and was generous and sassy of heart.
She will be missed by all.
She is survived by her children, Loren Vanden Berg and Mitch Vanden Berg (Cindy); her grandchildren, Aidan and Breanna; her sister, Mary Lou Sommers; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. Her sister, Marjean, preceded her in death.
A celebration of life will be held at a future date.
