Sue Guinn, Suzanne Yeomans Guinn, passed away on Jan. 8, 2018, at the Alaska Pioneer's Home in Fairbanks, Alaska. She and her husband, Chris, lived in Fairbanks for 50 years. Sue was a Speech Pathologist for the Fairbanks North Star Borough for 20 years, and in private practice for another 18 years, working with children with autism and speech disabilities. She received degrees from Western Michigan University ('66) and University of Wisconsin ('67).
Sue and Chris met in high school in Kalamazoo, Mich., and were married there in 1968, when they graduated from college. They came to Fairbanks shortly afterwards, when he was in the military. Fitting in as a military spouse in Alaska was new territory for Sue, but she adapted and was well respected for her accomplishments in the Department of Defense school system.
She leaves behind her husband, Chris; and son, Ian, both in Fairbanks. Sue had a love of learning and helping children with disabilities. When she worked for the Borough she was active in creating and administering special education policies. In her private practice she traveled to many Alaska villages. Her career took an upturn when she was selected as a Fellow of the American Speech and Hearing Association.
She had a love of Fairbanks and enjoyed her friends and colleagues. About two years ago she entered the Alaska Pioneer Home with dementia. She got wonderful care there. In her last days she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's.
