Sykes Hamilton was born on Dec. 10, 1944, in Newellton, La., to Wilma Hamilton and Woodrow Baker.
After high school, Sykes joined the United States Army and was stationed at Fort Richardson Army Base in Anchorage, Alaska, from 1966 to 1968. He joined the Greater Anchorage Area Borough Fire Department, which merged with the Municipality of Anchorage Fire Department. He retired as a Senior Fire Captain after 32 years of service. In 1971, he united with Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church and served as a trustee and an usher under Rev. A.B. Patterson. In 2002, he returned to Louisiana.
Sykes leaves behind two sons, Rodney and Aaron; one daughter, Verissa Mason; four siblings, Julia Pearre, Thomas Hamilton, Greg Williams and Barry Hamilton; grandchildren, Aaron and Payton; and a host of family and friends.
Sykes will be missed by many.
