Taprine Moats died in Pahoa, Hawaii, at the age of 37. Born in Ketchikan, Alaska, she graduated from Juneau High School while raising 35 foster kids with her mother. She graduated from Mid-America Nazarene University with a degree in nursing. Taprine loved being a pediatric critical care nurse at Children's Mercy in Kansas City, Mich., then at Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage, Alaska. She worked as a travel nurse from Alaska to Hawaii, where she settled in Pahoa with her son, Skyler, in 2014.
Taprine loved to travel and shared her smile across the U.S., Honduras, Guatemala, Tahiti and Scotland. She never met a stranger and loved children, family, gardening and a good book, but the love of her life was her son, Skyler Harris, age 4.
Taprine is survived by her son, Skyer Moats; mother, Melanie Moats (Mike); father, Michael Hurst (Sarah); brother, Casey Moats; sisters, Brianna Hurst and Jennifer Ruhl; grandmother, Joyce David; aunts, Susan Hurst, Elida Horn and Kathleen Dapcivich; uncle, David Hurst; and many hanai siblings.
Services were held on Nov. 4, 2017, at 11 a.m., in Pahoa, Hawaii, at Puna Sure Foundation, 16-1592 Pohaku circle (corner of Pohkau and Pahoa Highway). A reception followed at the home of Joyce David. Aloha attire welcome. Her ashes will be interred in Sitka, Alaska.
