Violet Willson Obituary

Lifelong Alaskan Violet Willson, 81, passed away on Jan. 15, 2015, at Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage, Alaska. A service was held on Sunday, Jan. 18, 2015, at Legacy Funeral Home Heritage Chapel at Angelus. Another service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2015, at 1 p.m. at Naknek Community Church in Naknek, Alaska. Daniel J. O'Hara will officiate. Pallbearers will be Everett Thompson, Justin Ryan, Ryan and Colton Roehl and Zackary and Kvichak Aspelund. Interment will be at Bristol Bay Borough Cemetery. Violet was born on Aug. 22, 1933, in Nielsen Bay on Iliamna Lake. She lived most of her life in the Iliamna Lake and Bristol Bay area, mainly South Naknek and Naknek. She spent most of her life commercial fishing in summer until retiring in 1994. She owned and operated "The Little House" bed and breakfast. She was a member of Naknek Community Church. Violet was awarded the Salty Dog Award in 2004 and Winterfest Queen 2005. Her hobbies included cooking, baking, putting up fish, visiting, crocheting, playing cards, telling old-time stories and taking pictures. Her family said, "Violet enjoyed being married but was widowed three times. Violet was very generous and helped a lot of people. Every potluck she always had rhubarb pie or pickled fish. She loved to cook and feed people. She lived the days of dog teams to self-driven cars, seen the era of radio to the first televisions and all the way to these magic little boxes we call computers. She was a self-made person and lived through so much love and loss. She was so strong for so long. She was a great advocate for our fisheries. She cared about our natural resources and knew that our health of our ecosystem was greater than ourselves and our lifetime." Violet is survived by her daughters, Betty Bonin, Carolyn Ryan and Candy Aspelund; sons, Guy Groat III, Kenneth Groat and John Roehl; sisters, Nellie Roehl, Ruth Monsen, Clara Angasan and Ann Quapaw; brother, Donald Nielsen; granddaughters, Rhonda Wayner, Izetta Chambers, Bridget Baumgarte, Marcia Clemons, Adele Rahman, Casey Groat, Lynsey Groat, Valli Peterson, Carmill Goldsberry, Amber Herrmann, Andrea and Kimberly Stogner and Violet Groat; grandsons, Everett Thompson, OT Daniel Stogner, Paul Groat, Ryan and Colton Roehl, Zackary and Kvichak Aspelund and Justin and Cory Ryan. She also leaves behind 24 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Arrangements entrusted to Legacy Funeral Home Heritage Chapel at Angelus.

I've always felt that you could truly know who a person was by what the people at their funeral said about them. Though I was not able to attend either of her services, from the things written here, I truly knew and loved this woman! That everyone has said the same things here just warms my heart! Indeed, Violet had a way of making everyone she met feel special, like family. I learned so much from her stories and from watching her in action about playing cards, commuinity, family values and about my own children's heritage. For that I will be forever grateful! I will miss you Violet and your laugh, the way you said "oh DEAR!" and the way your grandchildren all loved you so much! Rest in peace my friend!

What a wonderful woman Violet was a smile always on her face. Violet had a way of making everyone she knew feel special she always made me feel like family. I can see her smiling face and almost hear her voice saying Candy girl you ready to go . Violet loved to stay busy and was always helping others like the time she had us take some pies to the senior center with no thought that she was a senior. What a special lady I'm sure Naknek will feel their lost.

Always with a smile on her face and a kind word for all. She was a delight every time we were around her no matter whether it was on the beach, at church or around the community. A wonderful woman who had a heart of gold. She will be greatly missed. Our condolences to her family.

Knew Violet since childhood. Her strength and independent spirit inspired me to live my dream out in the wild, and visits with her over the years gave me strength to carry on when I doubted myself. She was such a positive force in my life. Will miss you, Dear Lady!

Violet made us all feel special in her presence. I know I always felt as if I was her favorite and all that knew her probably share that feeling. I will miss you and I know my mom is sure going to miss you too. You told me how much you loved the old days and the old ways. Enjoy them now, sweet lady.

I've know Violet since I got married in 1958 to a South Naknek boy.I will miss her monthly phone calls to check up on me.( like a second mom)
Back in the day when we didn't have clinics and health aides Violet had a regular radio scheduled with Kanakanak Hospital everyday and made sure we all had some health care.this was very important to me as I had a child with a heart condition.I will miss her but so happy to have had her for a friend.
God be with all the family in this sad time. Josie

Auntie Violet was one of my mother's most favorite people. It wasn't until late in adulthood that my mom found our family in Naknek and Auntie Violet always held a very special place in her heart. After my mom's passing, she wrote to me and expressed how much she missed long talks with my mom. Didn't we all, but now they'll be back to having those long talks.

I still use the beautiful hand-crafted knife from Uncle Arch; nothing cuts better.

The village has lost a very valuable elder. May we continue her legacy through sharing the stories, kindness, and generosity she always shared with everyone she knew.

Russ and I loved Violet (Arch, too) so much. She was the first person to make us feel at home in Naknek in 2001. We said our goodbyes to her in Sept., and we received the gift of many stories from long ago and a jar of salmonberry jelly. Our sincere condolences to her family. We know you are resting in the arms of Jesus, Violet, which is where you longed to be...no more crying there.
