Virginia Clara Hammons went to be with the Lord on Feb. 15, 2015. She was born on Nov. 10, 1939, to Dan Ptarmigan and Ellen Takak in White Mountain, Alaska. After the passing of her father, Virginia and her mother moved to Shaktoolik, Alaska, to be with family, where her mother married Edward Jackson. She was raised by Edward Jackson in Shaktoolik. When her mother passed away, she quit school to help her dad raise her seven brothers. Later, she married Gordon Nashalook and moved to Unalakleet, Alaska, where they raised their two daughters. After Gordon's passing, she moved to Girdwood, Alaska, and, shortly after, married Louis Hammons. Together they raised six children. Once Louis retired from the Alaska Railroad, they moved to Anchorage, Alaska. She worked at Peggy's Restaurant making pies, then at Super 8 Motel as a housekeeper. She also enjoyed camping, fishing, picking berries, playing bingo and shuffleboard, attending the Southcentral Foundation Elder's Program and feeding people. She will be missed by her family and many friends. She was a very friendly person and knew no strangers. Our family would like to thank all those who supported us during our times of need and keeping us in prayer. We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the doctors and nurses who took exceptional care of her. Virginia is survived by her children, Morris Hammons and Tellisa Holmes-Hammons, Edward Hammons, Gary Hammons, Carrie and Clarence Katchatag Jr. and Marie Hammons; grandchildren, Caroline Asicksik, Clyde Jackson, Charlene Katchatag, Edward Hammons II, Christian Hammons, Courtney Sookiayak, Crystal Katchatag and Landora Hammons; great-grandchildren, Jaylene Katchatag, Charlie Katchatag, Raelene Auliye, Louis Katchatag and Gavin Asicksik; her brothers, Edgar and Helen Jackson Sr., Peter Jackson Jr., Axel and Helen Jackson, Lynn and Betty Jackson and Kenny and Grace Takak; sister-in-law, Hannah Jackson-Long; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, Daniel Ptarmigan and Edward and Ellen Jackson; spouses, Gordon Nashalook and Louis Hammons; sister, Caroline Jackson; brothers, Raymond and Donald Jackson; daughter, Ellen Scott; nephews, Thomas Sagoonick and Bart Jackson; and her sons-in-law, Jim Stephens and Bruce Sookiayak. A visitation will be held at First Covenant Church, 1145 C Street in Anchorage on Friday, Feb. 20, 2015, at 10 a.m., with a service at 12 p.m. Arrangements are with Janssen's Evergreen Memorial Chapel.
