Longtime Alaska resident Winifred "Winnie" Nowak passed away on Nov. 19, 2017, in Arizona, where she moved in 2014 to be close to her family.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, March 13, 2018, at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 2222 East Tudor Road in Anchorage, Alaska.
Winnie was born on Oct. 24, 1921, in Donington, England. She graduated from nursing school in 1942, and was nursing in Stamford, England, during World War II, when she met and married John Nowak, an American serviceman. She sailed to America on the Queen Mary as a war bride, moving to John's hometown in Kansas. She began her nursing career in America, which spanned over 52 years. She proudly became an American citizen in 1949.
John was a meteorologist with the Weather Bureau and in 1953 they transferred to Alaska, driving the Alcan, their first assignment being in Cordova. They also lived in Northway, Annette Island and Anchorage. Winnie fell in love with Alaska, its people and its spirit, and was proud to be a part of it. Winnie was known for her adventurous, independent and loving spirit. Her faith and love of her family and many friends were the cornerstones of her life.
Winnie was an active member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church from its inception. She was also an active member and past president of Soroptimists International of Anchorage, and a volunteer with the Salvation Army.
She is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Thirza and Dave Collins of Ariz.; grandsons, Chad and wife Carmen Foster of California, Christopher and wife Virginia Foster; great-granddaughter, Krista Nile Foster, all of Arizona; niece, Suzanne and husband Larry Haller of California; nephew, Derek and wife Elaine White of British Columbia; and several other nieces and nephews of England.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Rose Kapingen Foundation, Soroptimists International of Anchorage on Cook Inlet or St. Mary's Episcopal Church Winnie Nowak scholarship fund.
