Margaret Gallatin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from May 31 to Jun. 1, 2010.
Margaret 'Peggy' Elaine (Burrell) Gallatin, 83, died May 26, 2010, at home in Anchorage.

Interment will be at Union Cemetery in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, at a later date

Peggy was born Aug. 20, 1926, in Ridgeley, W.Va., to Andrew J. Burrell and N. Pearl (Acord) Burrell. A graduate of Allegheny High School and Catherman Business School in Cumberland, Md., Peggy married Harry M. Gallatin on June 14, 1947. They made their first homes in West Virginia before owning their dairy farm in western Pennsylvania. They moved to the Gettysburg, Pa., area in 1966. There Peggy retired in 1991 as chief of marine and aviation licensing for the Federal Communications Commission.

She later moved to Hamburg, Pa., to be with her son and his family, and was a member of the Hamburg Community Seventh-day Adventist Church.

She had lived in Anchorage since 2006.

The family wrote: "Peggy was a loving wife, mother, and 'Nana' to many beyond her own family. Her life was built on the pillars of family, faith, and music. A classically trained pianist, she served her church through music for over 70 years. She loved sharing six-part gospel harmonies with her husband and children, and cherished nothing more than hearing her family sing. She trusted in God through many adverse circumstances and taught her family to do the same."

She is survived by her son, Matthew L. Gallatin and his wife Alice of Sandpoint, Idaho; son, Kelly B.

Gallatin and his wife Beverly of Hamburg, Pa.; daughter, Peg E. (Gallatin) Banks of Anchorage; grandchildren, Joshua and wife Tiffani, and Kaci, all of Idaho; Shane and Danika of Hamburg, Pa,; and great-grandchildren, Zachary, William and Luci, all of Idaho. She is also survived by her loving family at Fine Pearle Assisted Living in Anchorage.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Amory F. Burrell and Marion R. Burrell; her husband, Harry M. Gallatin; and son, Barry C. Gallatin.

Memorial donations may be directed to Friends of Pets, P.O. Box 240981, Anchorage 99524.

I have been thinking of Nana so often lately, and I think what I miss most from her is the widsom and tact that she possesed. She was loving and accepting of everyone.

From the first day I met her, I felt as though I was one of her MANY kids. We all come in diffrent sizes and ages you know , but we all knew we were family to her and she always made us feel apart and loved.

One great memory I have that means the most to me was when I ask her to help me learn how to sew. She did help me complete a couple of things for Jennefer, and I even made a dress at my house because of the skills she taught me. Those afternoons with her at the Biglerville Road house were moments spent teachings not only of sewing but of her sharing how to experience life filled with Jesus love.

Matt, Peg, Kelly..THANK YOU for sharing your mom with so many. I praise God for the blessing that she sleeps and I do believe soon and very soon she will be raised at the trumpet sound and will be reunited with her Savior that she loved and depended on here on this earth!!

I also hold a moment in mind when she says to you, well, there goes Bun, he's heading to work again today...maybe not on the mountain roads and in the orchards, but probably doing something some where very important on those streets of gold.

I know that there homes will be on a mountainn somewhere very special in heaven!!!

We love you all so much! Ed and Gwen

I remember when Ms. Peggy came to Fine Pearle Assisted Living on her birthday in 2008. She greeted us with a warm smile on her face. It was the same smile that greeted all of us the morning of May 26th. That morning I decided to cook “biscuit and gravy” for breakfast…Ms. Peggy’s favorite! She woke up with a surge of energy, happily said “good morning Perlita, good morning Ms. Victoria, good morning Ana, good morning Ms.Ernie” something’s different I thought. She ate her breakfast so fast as if she was in a hurry that she didn’t want to be late for something. As soon as she finished her breakfast, she said that was the best breakfast she ever had.

On her last few weeks with us, I caught her staring at me several times. She would follow me with her stare in every direction I went. I would ask her “are you ok Ms. Peggy? Do you need something?” And she’ll just say “oh I’m ok and I don’t need anything”. The look on those eyes saddened me because I knew behind those unspoken words; I knew she knew she’s getting closer. And like a mother, she would hide her feelings from me because as she put it “I worried a lot”. We have so much fond memories of Ms. Peggy, we enjoyed her morning talks and after meal stories, her humor and how she shared her wonderful God given talent with us. I called her a “walking encyclopedia”.

Peg, she loved you so dearly and I know you knew it. She was so proud of you and repeatedly told us how lucky she was to have such a caring and loving daughter. She was worried about you and who’s going to take care of you. Jokingly I told her, if I still have the business, I will, so don’t you worry Ms. Peggy. Matt, she always bragged about your beautiful voice so very often. She treasured you so much. And Kelly, she always wanted to see you once again, but she said she knew it’s impossible and she understood. She woke up one morning and I heard the first thing she asked Ana was “is Kelly out there”? She missed you so much and I think you know that explained those 4:00 am phone calls.

Thank you very much for choosing us to care for your mother. We’re privileged to be a part of the last one year and nine months of her life in this world. Jehovah God gave us all promise of resurrection thru Jesus Christ ransom sacrifice and in due time, God’s willing; we will see Ms. Peggy again in the promised paradise. Ms. Peggy touched our hearts and we all missed her so dearly. Time will heal the silence of her absence and the feeling of incompleteness. But till then, Ms. Peggy’s memories will cheer us all. Take care and thank you again for sharing with us your wonderful mother.

Love,
Perlita, Larry, Laurence, Ana, Farrah

Dear Gallatin Family- I am so sorry to hear of Peggy's passing. I am a previous co-worker of Peggy's from the FCC Gettysburg office. (I still work here- 33 yrs) Beverly may remember me- she was a year (or 2?) ahead of me in high school..? I worked with Peggy for many years. She was a kind, sweet lady, and I liked her very much. She spoke lovingly of her family all the time! Thinking of you all with sympathy at this time, and hoping the wonderful memories will comfort you. She was a special lady! May God Bless!

Peggy was one of the dearest, sweetest & kindest people I ever had the privilege of knowing. I never heard an unkind word come out of her mouth, yet she always spoke her words in truth and love, while speaking her mind. I don't know how she did that! She was a great example and an inspiration. I loved her music. Each time she sat down to the piano we all knew we were in for a treat! Her family is testimony of her love for the Lord as they pass that same love on to their children and the world. Soon, Peggy will be playing and singing with the angels, which is where she was created to be!

I absolutely love my Nana. Seeing all the pictures of who shaped her makes me backtrack. Wars and loss shaped her into a person that was, at least to me, pretty fearless. It made her unafraid to walk outside after 9/11 when some people would be scared to, and made her the kind of person drove on roads even though she didn't know where they would end up. When I'm gone, and I'm making a statement now, that her pictures better be somewhere in mine. Maybe it was the age, but Nana wasn't afraid of what anybody else thought of her. She knew who she was, and you either loved her or hated her for it. And she taught me that I didn't need to be afraid of who I was or defend who I wanted to be, because I was myself. And that's why she's so important to me. Because she let me be myself, and loved me no matter what. That was a feat. But a small one out of the many in her life.
Love you Nana, and I'll be seeing you sometime.

Peggy was so much fun to be around. She always was positive, even about the negative! We enjoyed talking about music, books, pets, her children, and helping with crossword puzzles. Her Anchorage Northside SDA Church family really appreciated her willingness to assist with playing the piano while she was able. Our prayer is for your comfort that can only truly come from God.

She was always an encouragement to me and my family. Her strong faith and life knowlege was such a blessing to my adult Sabbath school class in the old Gettysburg church. I always thought of her as a second mother as I know many others did as well. I'm really looking forward to that great day, when I can give her a great big hug once again! Marantha

Mom's faith in times of trouble or grief often relied on this promise:
"For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11

We love you mama!
