Roland Kickbush Obituary

Former Anchorage resident Roland Gene "Kick" Kickbush, 83, died peacefully June 25, 2009, in a California care facility. He was born May 25, 1926, in Osterdock, Iowa, to Lloyd and Ethel Kickbush. He was a graduate of Stout Institute, Menominee, Wis., and became a vocation education teacher in California and Alaska. Once a year, Roland interviewed teachers from the Lower 48 to fill positions for the Career Center in Anchorage. Roland and his wife, Alaska artist Joan Arend Kickbush, built their first home in Anchorage in 1960 with members of their families helping. Roland loved flying his airplane to villages in Alaska while Joan sketched on her pad to capture the scene and children playing. She later finished paintings back in her studio. Their favorite village was Savoonga on St. Lawrence Island. They enjoyed flying over the Alaska Highway, traveling home to Wisconsin. At night, they slept under the wing of the plane and enjoyed wildlife and beautiful scenery. He kept busy matting and framing paintings done by his wife, Joan, who preceded him in death on June 16, 2006. He loved hunting bear, moose, salmon fishing, golfing and his airplane. He enjoyed showing horses in Alaska and won blue ribbons and trophies. He retired, leaving Anchorage in 1978 for Bend, Ore., Borrego Springs, Calif., and Carefree, Ariz., with Joan painting and sculpting and Roland ranching. "Roland was a man of incredible integrity. His infectious smile and friendly, outgoing personality won everyone's heart," his family wrote. He is loved and remembered by sisters Phyllis Craig and Rita Raychel (Edward); in-laws, Albert Kickbush, Jan Arend Clark and Jay Arend (Amy); 24 nephews and nieces; and friends and all who were blessed to know him. The family wishes to thank the caregivers and Hospice for their support, which was so appreciated.

Dear Kickbush Fmaily,
My name is Katie from Ohio. I would like to express my condolences to youn and your family on the loss of your loved one. I wanted to share with you and encouraging thought from the Bible. The Bible assures us that the time will come when “death will be no more,” so no one will be growing old and then dying.—Revelation 21:4. With that promise fulfilled, humans will enjoy perfect life, unmarred by sin and death. Meanwhile, we can take comfort in knowing that our dead loved ones are resting, and if they are in God’s memory, they will be resurrected in his due time.

Mr. Kickbush was one of several outstanding teachers from my K-12 experience in Anchorage. Along with Frank Kufel, he was the cream of the crop at Wendler in 1961-62.
His family can be justly proud of his contribution to the community.
I am sad to see his passing, but happy to see he lead such a fulfilling life the years since our paths last crossed.

Heartfelt best wishes to Mr. K.'s family. He was a sweet, fun-loving and generous man who was especially kind to the neighbor children, including me, as we grew up. I remember how he surprised Mrs. K. with a plane trip and tickets to see her favorite singer, Mel Torme. They loved their horses and dogs, never tired of exploring their favorite odd corners of the world (Hawaii, Alaska, the California desert) and both were embraced by the community wherever they lived. I remember him with gratitude and love.

Mr. Kickbush taught me mechanical drawing around 1961-62. He was really patient and very friendly. Would greet me in the street, lol, a kid never would talk to a teacher in the street. Good man. Glad to read that he had a good life, he earned it.

I have great memories of Kick from when we taught together back in the late 1950's in Anchorage. He was a great guy. We have 4 of Joan's pictures which Kick framed, so many memories of this couple. Sally Horner DuClos

Our family was enriched by our friendship with Roland and Joan from the 1960s when they built in our Sand Lake neighborhood. Our sympathies to the family, and a special note to Mayor Jay Arend whom Cathy is privileged to know from living in Naples and working closely with the Bonita Springs Chamber of Commerce with governmental affairs and our amazement to find this family connection. She is glad your family enjoyed her baby shower card which Joan painted back in 1956. The Heyworth Family - Gene, Scott, Todd, Cathy and our beloved Mother Sue.
