Dave Alward Obituary

Willow resident and lifelong Alaskan David Miles Alward died suddenly on May 10, 2013, at his home.

An informal gathering of family and friends will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday May 18th on Jean Lake off Long Lake road in Willow at the hanger at 47500 W. Causey Lane.

Dave was born in Palmer April 24, 1940 to Steve and Bernice Alward. He graduated from Anchorage High School in 1958 where he was a member of the State Championship Basketball Team.

Dave worked in his early years at Monty's Department Store, Alaska Moving and Storage, Anchorage Westward Hotel, Arden's Dairy, the Alaska Pipeline and as the Co-Owner of B&D Furniture Refinishing with his brother in law Bill Emswiler. Later he worked and enjoyed being a bus driver for People Mover before retiring as a teamster. In addition he was an outstanding carpenter and general handyman.

His family came to Alaska as a part of the Matanuska Valley Colony Project. Dave loved spending time with his family both immediate and his "adopted" Willow Boitz Family. He grew up in an Alaskan lifestyle hunting and fishing, jeeping, four wheeling, snowmachining, and camping at Montana Creek. He never missed an opportunity to peg a point at cribbage, throw a ton-eighty in darts and taking the bid in a game of pinochle.

Dave is survived by his three sons and their wives: Joe and Corrine, Jerry and Annette, and Jason and Sandy. His daughter Alaina and Bryan Anderson; grandchildren, Jake, Megan ,Avery, Grayson and Taylor. Brothers Ted, Joe and Piddy, sisters Sue and Kenny Hightower, Marybeth and Jim Whitman and sisters in law Elsie and Judy, Aunts Shirley and Mary Piakowski, and many many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Mike, Bob, Steve and Buz; his daughter Charlene and the love of his life Elaine Pettis.

His ashes will be spread at Big Rock Montana Creek this summer, a place that was special to him and will always be a four wheeling destination for his family.

Arrangements were with Kehl's Palmer Legacy Funeral Home.

Alaina & Family, So very sorry for your loss. Though I had only met your Dad once, the wonderful stories you all told of him over the years made him seem like an old friend. And it appears he left each of you with a lifetime of good memories and a great sense of family. May those memories bring you comfort and hold tight to one another as you move thru the days and weeks ahead. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Dave, you will be missed more than you could ever know. You were such an important part of so many lives. Things won't be the same without you.

Joe, Jerry, Jason, Alaina and families - I think all of you know how much your dad meant to me. He will be in my heart forever. My thoughts and prayers are with you all!

I drove transit bus with Dave for many years for People Mover. We worked on our trucks together, drank coffee (the man loved coffee!), played darts...I really enjoyed his company. I spoke with him a few months back when I found his phone number. Same old Dave. We had many good laughs and I was happy to find that he was very content. I already miss my good friend.

Uncle Dave you were taken so suddenly we are all in shock. Just know that you will be deeply missed at all of the family four wheeling trips and functions. It will never be the same and you will.... Squirrel! LOL that will always be our families joke while riding. RIP and say hi to my dad and all the other family.

Good morning Dad

I am so proud of our family and the help of the Boitz family and others over the last few days. We know Grandpa Dave wouldn't have wanted everyone fussing over all of these matters. However, we are hopeful that people can attend his celebration of life, say "HI", and share a story about the time when...........:)

God Bless,
Jason/Sandy/Avery/Grayson
