Daniel "Shorty" Anthony Stewart, Jr., 36, died before his time on April 22 in Anchorage.
A resident of Anchorage since childhood, Shorty graduated from Dimond High School in 1998. He worked at Tee Braids, the Academy of Hair Design, Providence Hospital, Hope Cottages, and the ARC of Anchorage and was respected by his employers and colleagues for his strong work ethic and positive spirit.
A gentle and playful soul, Shorty and his radiant smile were well-known and appreciated throughout our community. He loved people and animals with equal fervor. Shorty never met a stranger and his cheerful, joking presence lit up every room he entered. His arrival was always an event. Nobody's bad mood survived an encounter with Shorty. He was the most fun person his family and many friends ever knew.
Shorty was a thoughtful and considerate friend whose sincere and straightforward approach to life inspired those around him. He was always there for anyone in need.
Shorty's many interests included the Special Olympics, photography, hiking, camping, downhill skiing, and dancing. He was a masterful rider of mechanical bulls.
Services for Shorty will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, April 29th at the North Anchorage Church of God, 1711 S. Bragaw. A viewing will be held next door the day before, April 28th, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Witzleben Funeral Home at 1707 S. Bragaw Street in Anchorage.
Survivors include his mother, Sylvia Stewart; sister, Tracy Washington and brother-in-law James Washington; father, Daniel Anthony Stewart, Sr. and his wife Hyacinth; aunts, Carol Sewell, Cynthia Chappell, Paulette Collier, Patricia Thomas, Robin Player, and Saidah Abdurrahman; uncles, Clifton Sewell, Jr., Robert Player, Lyric Collier; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Shorty's name to Alaska SPCA (animal welfare), 549 W. International Airport Rd., Anchorage, Alaska, 99518.
