Michele Nickerson Obituary

Michele "Micki Jo" Nickerson, nee Poorman, was born on June 24, 1949, in Fairbanks, Alaska. She passed away peacefully on Aug. 20, 2015, in Anchorage, Alaska. Micki grew up in Takotna, McGrath and Anchorage. She truly enjoyed the tranquility and beauty of rural life. She survived the 1964 earthquake with a wild ride on the 13th floor of the Inlet Tower, when the wall briefly opened and her shirt sleeve got stuck in the adjacent apartment's closet. In 1967, Micki graduated from high school in Seattle, Wash., and moved back to Anchorage, where she worked for George's market and the post office. In 1972, she met her soul mate, Gary Nickerson, whom she married in Las Vegas, Nev., in 1973. They moved to Oregon, where they raised their two sons, Fred and David, on a farm. Micki loved her flowers and spent many hours gardening. She never, not once, turned away a stray animal, not even a deer. Shortly after her husband's death in 1982, she moved her small family back to Anchorage to be closer to extended family. Micki was extremely generous and always made time to help friends and strangers. Her greatest joy was spending time with her two boys and doting on her five grandchildren. She loved telling fun stories about their crazy adventures. Micki was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Idge Poorman; and her husband, Gary Nickerson. She is survived by her sons, Fred and David (Petra) Nickerson; her sister, Dale Ann (Brian) Peterson; her grandchildren, Greyson, Annania, and the triplets Camden, Sawyer and Maddy; her mother-in-law, Dorothea Nickerson; her goddaughter, Elanamarie Crosby; her sister-in-law, Sallie Nickerson; her brother-in-law, Bill (Joanne) Trefethen; and her only niece, Anne and family. A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, Aug. 23, 2015, at 2 p.m., at the home of her son, David, at 9501 Nettleton Dr. in Anchorage.

Micki, I will never forget how you used to get on Dale and I when we were growing up, you were like a big sister to me and you treated me like I was your little sister. I will miss our talks on what our grandkids are up too and seeing you when I come up to Alaska. I know your a angle because god only has angles with big hearts that are full of love, that you always gave. You are and will be forever in my heart. I love you, Micki Love, Linda Eagen

Thank you Micki for your friendship and warmth through out the years. It is hard to find truly good people in the world and were one of the finest. I will miss our random phone calls which were way to far between. Thanks for taking care of me through my many surgeries in Anchorage. Safe passage. your Kodiak friend Penny

Micki, I know mom was not herself towards the end. But I would like to think that she is back to her old self and welcoming you with open arms. I'm really going to miss our late night phone conversations and speratic lunches. You were a very special person in this family's life and will be dearly missed.
You were the first person to offer to help no matter what the circumstances were. What you did for our mom, without a doubt earned you, your angel wings. Love you Micki
