Adan Parker Obituary

Former Anchorage resident Adan Parker, 25, died on Nov. 10, 2015, in Olympia, Wash. Adan was born on July 11, 1990, in Anchorage, Alaska, to Bill and Patrice Metcalfe Parker. He attended Chugach Optional, Central Middle School and West High School. He moved to Olympia in 2008, to attend The Evergreen State College, but soon found his passion in punk rock and remained there, becoming part of the renowned Olympia music scene. Adan was wise beyond his years and cared deeply about others. His older sisters often came to him for advice. He was a voracious reader who spent hours educating himself on history and political theory. His curiosity and passions drove his pursuits. He believed deeply in social justice, was extremely principled and lived true to his strong personal values. He did not seek others' approval and direction: he was proud to forge his own path. Four years ago he taught himself to play the drums and had his own music studio in Olympia. He recently began to teach himself guitar. This summer he toured the West Coast with his band Defaceman, and had plans to travel to Ireland next year to play music. Adan loved his family and friends deeply, and was consistently kind and wise and true to them. He lived with a bright and engaging spirit. Those who love him were stunned by the shadow that passed across his hopeful light, and will remember the brightness he brought into the world. His family said: "The world lost another tender soul. Adan and his brother Aram made brief but remarkable appearances. They were both, in very different ways, too sensitive for this world. Our hearts are broken in new places." Adan was preceded in death by his older brother, Aram Parker; grandparents, Vern and Pat Metcalfe of Juneau, Alaska; grandparents, William and Veronica Parker of Des Moines, Iowa; uncle, Paul Helmar of Juneau; and great-aunts, Nadine Price of Anchorage, Kay Prather of Juneau and Marilyn Kling of Chicago, Ill. His freshman year roommate and dear friend, John Buchanan of Connecticut, also preceded him in death. Adan is survived by his parents, Bill and Patrice Parker; sisters, Mara Carnahan, Anya Parker and Alia Parker; brothers-in-law, Patrick Carnahan and Neil Coles; and nephews, Finn and Adler Carnahan. He is also survived by his uncles, Pat and Tim Parker of West Des Moines, Iowa; aunts and uncles, Mac and Ann, Kimberly, Peter and Sandy and John and Gemma Metcalfe, all of Juneau; Teeny Metcalfe and Ray Brudie and Jake Metcalfe and Moira Smith of Anchorage; Mark and Linda Metcalfeof California; and Heather and Ronnie Bell of North Carolina; cousins, Patrice and Leo Helmar, Luke, Lynn and Nellie Metcalfe, Bienvenido, Peter, Maggie and Owen Metcalfe, Justin and Jason Metcalfe and Ronnie, Patricia and Nadine Bell. He was loved by many loyal friends, including Betty Ramage and Don Clocksin, Laurie and Steven Constantino, Evan and Ruby Fried, Tieri Li'eno, Alice Wynne, Silas Romig, Grace Spohnholz, and the love of his life, Julia Suazo. A memorial service will be held at noon on Monday, Nov. 16, 2015, at Bear Tooth Theaterpub. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the suicide prevention organization, NowMattersNow.org.

Adan you are a beautiful person. Intelligent, caring, and loved by all your friends. As much sorrow there is in my heart now. There is equal parts appreciation. That our two souls met and spent time together on this earth. I value this so highly. I will never forget about you adan. Until we meet again friend.

I am happy to have met Adan when he was 7 at Muni camp and then hanging around his sisters. He was such a great kid and turned into a real cool adult. I am sorry for your pain and am thinking about your family.

John took this pic of Adan and Julia at Evergreen ('09-10?).

To Tissy, Bill, Mara, Anya, Alia, the Metcalfe and Parker families,

There are those rare souls among us who feel the pain of the world so deeply, caretakers and warriors both, who shine so brightly, they cannot stay. They remain our beacons, our conscience, showing us the way, to take care of each other, to fight injustice, to be kind. We keep learning from them, if we listen with our hearts.

Adan was one of these shooting stars. He was an extraordinary young man, gifted, funny, humble, kind, generous. Adan was not only John's friend, he was his brother-by-choice. The world is dimmed by his loss, the night sky is brighter. He touched so many and gave so much, my heart breaks for you, for his friends, for all of us who feel his loss.

We will never stop missing, remembering, this gentle, remarkable young man.

My heart breaks over and over again. So much love, so much sorrow.

I was a friend of Aram. I did not know Adan, and probably the last time I saw him would have been when he was a toddler. Just as it was with Aram, Adan's death is obviously shocking and terrible. Your family has been through so much, and I can only wish you all peace.

Your loss weighs heavy on my heart. Maybe, even though I did not know your boy, I can carry a pound myself to take off of your shoulders. May the universe shine some sort of light in your life.

Of all the new friends my son made after transferring to Chugach Optional Elementary in 1997, Adan was my favorite. What a unique and lovable boy he was! I have not been in contact with anybody from those days, but still think about all of them frequently. We all enjoyed a wonderful school community there, and I always wish the best to all of my old friends from those times. News of Adan's passing was really devastating to read. Patrice and Bill, can't imagine how you must feel. People engaged in artistic endeavors of all kinds are very near and dear to my heart, and the terrible dichotomy many of them deal with is they often create their best work at times of greatest personal turmoil.

Dear Bill and Patrice, your son's life had a tremendous impact on my own son, Dann, a friend of Adan's in Olympia. He told me that Adan was the kindest, warmest person he had met in Olympia since he moved there for school 3 years ago. I'm so sorry for your loss, my heart is breaking for you.
