A great man......a mentor, soldier, father, Army Ranger and friend. A class act, and I miss him.

They don't make NCOs or leaders like Jan anymore. What an amazing career he had. He was a CSM longer than most Soldiers serve. I knew Jan from the Eagle River VFW. I think the first time I met him, he said I was the best looking CSM he had met. We laughed and I gave him a hard time. He always went out of his way to send his famous smoked salmon to my parents and in return my Dad would send him Bluegills which he loved. He will be missed.

Jan Schalavin was the best friends I ever had. He stood me up when I needed it. I owe my degree and my success to him. There will never be another like him. I have never known of any one that was upset with him or had anything to say negative about him. He was honorable, and he was honored. I will miss him so much.

Amazing testimony to a great man. I remember "helping" Ron Snead and Jan with a moose in Ron's shop. I was honored to be allowed in : ) He did have a way with food and generosity! RIP

Jan Schalavin was such a remarkable man and outstanding leader, I never heard a single disparaging word about him, in the time I served under him in 2nd Ranger Bn. On the contrary, he was always admired and well spoken of. His style of leadership was singularly unique and very effective. He is and forever will be, indelibly etched into my memory and was a milestone in shaping my life. You will always be missed, Top.

I had the distinct honor of meeting CSM Schalavin while he was the Infantry School CSM here at Benning. He was the epitome of a Ranger CSM and I just stood in reverence at how he would command a room, whenever he walked in. Absolute respect, honor, and appreciation for this great Warrior and all that he has done for our great Nation. Rest in Peace, Brother; your Tour is done and you can now rest. You truly lead the way! It was an Honor! RLTW!

I worked for 1st Sergeant Schalavin as his acting Company Clerk at Charlie Company, 2nd RANGER Battalion for a better part of 3 years. Working up close with him, I saw on a daily basis how much he loved his "Pawartrrrooopers" and how much he demanded of them. He was truly a class act, and the epitome oj an Airborne Ranger Senior NCO. Til Valhalla Top. Rangers Lead The Way!

He was my 1st Sergeant in C 2/75 Rangers long ago, but more than that he was a friend to me, my wife, and my sons later in our lives. I will miss him, and remember him fondly always. Sua Sponte, Top.

CSM Schalavin was my first BN CSM in the Army in 1/75. His personal care for Rangers and leadership style drove was infectious and I aspired to follow many of those same character traits in my development. I am proud to have a small part of him in my soul. I will remember him and share my thoughts of him until i meet him again next to the big Ranger in the Sky. CSM Schalavin you truly led the way. Bless you brother! RLTW, Doug Greenway
