George Chynoweth Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 28, 2010.
George Chynoweth (1923-2010) passed away Sunday, November 28, 2010, finally succumbing to his third bout with Lymphoma. Born October 17, 1923 to Phillips and Edith (Galvin) Chynoweth, George was raised in New York City and attended the Fieldston School. While a student at the University of Wisconsin, George was drafted into the Army Air Corps and served as a Radio Mechanical Operations Gunner in the South Pacific during World War II. George returned to the University of Wisconsin after the war to complete his degree in Chemical Engineering. He then went to work for the Hooker Chemical Company in Niagara Falls, New York, spending his entire 36-year working career at this company and its various successors. George married the love of his life, Marilyn Louise Bayes on March 8, 1952 in Niagara Falls, NY. Not wasting any time, the Chynoweth’s proceeded to have four children over the next six years, plus a fifth (the little dividend) in 1965. George’s rise up the Hooker Chemical corporate ladder kept the family on the move with residences in Lewiston, NY, Western Springs, IL, Buffalo, NY, Tarrytown, NY, La Grange, IL and Ridgewood, NJ. Along the way they accumulated numerous life-long friends. Upon retirement in 1985, George and Marilyn moved to Albuquerque, NM to live closer to their children. George was active in the Church of the Good Shepherd, Albuquerque Newcomers’ Club, and the New MexiChords barbershop chorus. He loved tennis, gardening, singing, riding waves in Avalon, NJ, skiing (particularly after he turned 70 and it was free) and the New York Times. But most of all George loved family. He leaves a legacy of family dinners, sing-a-longs, ski weekends at Wolf Creek and summer vacations in Avalon, New Jersey. George was preceded in death by his brothers Phillips, John and Bill, and is survived by his wife Marilyn, son Phil and his wife Kipp, daughter Gail and her husband Jim Bullard, son Paul and his wife Julie, son Jim and his wife Hilma all of Albuquerque; son Bob and his wife Marie of Fishers, IN; 13 grandchildren: Sean Chynoweth, Jeff Chynoweth and his wife Dani, Jessica Chynoweth, Ryan Pennington and his wife Heather, Monica Pennington, Rob Keedy, Lauren Bullard, Aren Chynoweth, Brianna Chynoweth, Will Chynoweth, Henry Chynoweth, Thomas Chynoweth, and Olivia Chynoweth; and two great grandchildren, Syra and Louis. George also leaves a sister-in-law Shirley Dennis Chynoweth, cousin Mary Rhyme, and numerous nephews and nieces, along with innumerable friends and well wishers. He lived a full life that was admired by all who knew him and he will be greatly missed for his grace, humor and generosity of spirit. Services will be held at the Church of the Good Shepherd, 7834 Tennyson NE at 11:00 AM, Saturday, December 11, 2010. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Church of the Good Shepherd – Chynoweth Fund, 7834 Tennyson NE, Albuquerque, NM 87122 or Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation – General Home Healthcare and Hospice Fund in George Chynoweth’s name.
