She is sorely missed, even now. Dr. Byrd gave me my first French lessons, fostered a love of plants, and travel. She was a treasure.

Madame Byrd was truly the "MADAME"! Her French instruction was the best. She took me under her wings and helped me navigate the course through Benedict College. She inspired and encouraged me. A joy and laughter to know and behold! I learned of her transition several months afterward. Saddened. A phenomenal woman, indeed!

Dr. Byrd, you will be missed. You were one of my favorite professors at Benedict College. I'm glad I had the chance to advance my knowledge of French with such an astounding woman. She was funny & full of life yet stern in class , making sure students were giving their full potential. Love always, Reaya.

Dr. Bryd was my literature teacher at Benedict in 1982. She taught me the importance of social activism and just by requiring all of her students to get a bible helped to change my life. Fiesty, learned, tireless, and Black Griot is how I remember her. Rest now, you are the definition of a good and faithful servant...

Where are the words to honor Dr. Byrd? They have not yet been created. But in my mortal way, I will try.

She truly was a giant among mankind, yet quiet and unassuming. Her efforts were for all people, blind to any demarcation among us.

Her gentle way always created a calming, providing the assurance that everything would be ok. And it always was, as she always seemed to find that calming way.

Her time and effort was always unselfish, as she wanted to create a better world, whether via one person at a time, or by her extensive public service to so many. Though she has never been recognized and lauded as many others have, she stands equal to any of the other giants of equality, freedom and love. Her accomplishments, history, and creations deserve to be recorded in history, and hopefully they will.

A quiet giant, a gentle giant, a giant all the same, Dr. Byrd was a special person sent to our world to help us be better. That she did, her mission accomplished.

We all are better for what she did for us. And what she nurtured that continues to grow within us.

Thank you Dr. Alma Byrd. You left a wonderful, loving and positive life impression with me, for which I am eternally grateful.

Dr. Byrd was an amazing jewel. Her French classes at Wilkinson High School in Orangeburg, SC during the fifties and sixties were lively, full of fun, yet academically engaging. She encouraged us to experiment with the language and made learning French an enjoyable experience. She valued learning. She valued us. Heaven holds a very special place for her.

My heart is saddened to hear the passing of Dr. Byrd....he spirit impacted many if you ever came in contact with her. She was my French Instructor in 2004 @ Benedict. "I can remember he words to me and the class: "I admire you for bringing your children to class while you're getting your education" (when I didn't have a babysitter) She would tell the class it was no excuse to miss if this lady had her children in class with her y'all can make it to class too. I can go on and on but yes she was a very joyful person whom took education very serious!

I am ssooo sorry to hear of Dr. Byrd's passing. I just spoke with her niece a couple of weeks ago. I met Dr. Byrd many, many years ago while she was serving as the president of the Columbia Chapter of the National Council of Negro Women. We have been friends since. We shared both family names, Spann as her mother's birth name, and as my birth name, and Byrd as both of our married names. She was a wonderful, wonderful person. I will certainly miss her dearly.

With heartfelt commiserations to the family of Dr. Byrd. One of a kind and phenomenal in the capacity of her endeavors. She had excellent teaching strategies and sought the success of many graduates as myself of Benedict College, who studied French under her professionalism. In recent weeks I am so glad to have spent the time I did visiting and commemorating with Dr. Byrd. She will truly be missed and her legacy will forever live within my heart.

A true humanitarian, stateswoman, professor, mentor and friend, I will miss her physical presence but her spirit will remain with me always.

Dr. Byrd provided me my first student work-study job assisting in the Benedict College French lab. We have been friends-now for over forty years. I will miss sending her friendship and holiday cards written in my imperfect french. (Au revoir, madame le dr mai Byrd votre aile d'or et sourire contagieux remplir les cieux.) Goodbye Madam Dr. Byrd may your golden wings and infectious smile fill the heavens.

My surrogate mother, my teacher, my mentor, my role model....Dr. Alma W. Byrd!! A lady extraordinaire who came into my life when I was 18 years old, when our mother-daughter relationship began and never ended, my love for her is eternal. I miss her now and will continue to miss her on earth. But, as she was, I too am Christian and know we will be together again. Okay Ma Byrd until then, I'll do the very best that I can, hold fast to the many lessons you taught me about life. You have gone where angels belong, I feel your spirit with me now, and I know it WILL remain; this, I'll hold fast to it until we are face-to-face again. Also, I know from now on on every birthday I celebrate, I'll hear your voice singing Happy Birthday to me as you did for my last one while you were here very much alive. Now you are alive to me spiritually and I am so thankful for our closeness. I can smile because I had/HAVE a one-of-a-kind Mother. You, Dr. Alma Weaver Byrd. (Smile) I'm surf you noticed how I tried to keep my message in the third person when referring to you, but went to the second. I guess that's because you are alive in me spiritually. Je t'aime. Me te verrai plus tard. Your daughter, Irene Reed Singletary
