AIKEN, SC - Arthur Joseph Sullivan, 94, husband of the late Jean North Quirk Sullivan, died Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at his residence.
A native of Lawrence, MA, Mr. Sullivan was a son of the late Daniel and Elsie Wonderly Sullivan. He was a veteran of the United States Navy during World War II. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from The University of Notre Dame and then taught at Aiken Preparatory School from 1947 -1956. Mr. Sullivan then went to work as a special investigator in Naval Intelligence, living and working in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Irving, TX and Fairfax, VA prior to becoming Regional Director for the Boston Region of Defense Investigative Service. He retired from the Department of Defense in 1982 and moved back to Aiken.
Survivors include three daughters, Nancy (Michael) Sheehy, Austin, TX, Joan Weaver, Aiken, SC, Elizabeth (Michael) Carter, Fredericks-burg, VA; two sons, Michael (Christa) Sullivan, Warren-ville, SC, Paul (Tammy) Sullivan, Warrenville, SC; six grandchildren, Jennifer Wood-ward, Anchorage, AK, Catherine Sheehy, Seattle, WA, Matthew Sheehy, Austin, TX, Ryan Sullivan, Aiken, SC, Kellyn Sullivan, Warrenville, SC, Michael C. Sullivan, Bunker Hill, West Va; six great-grandchildren; and a niece, Diane (Jack) Martino, Phillipsburg, NJ.
The family will receive friends Tuesday the 29th of April beginning at 1 o'clock in the afternoon at Shellhouse-Rivers Funeral Home, followed by a funeral service at 2 o'clock. The Rev. Dr. Henry L. Chennault will officiate. Interment will follow in Historic Bethany Cemetery with Military Honors.
