Harry Johnston Scruton
AIKEN, SC - Harry
Johnston Scruton, age 86, of Aiken, South Carolina and Ocean Point, Maine died Friday, March 27. The son of Harry W. and Alice (Hunt) Scruton, he was born April 21, 1928 in New Brunswick, New Jersey. A graduate of Ridley College, St. Catherines, Ontario, he also attended Drew University. During the summer, Harry's experience working with the forestry service in Colorado maintaining the mountain trails, riding a horse and packing a horse, was a memorable one for him.
After serving as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army from 1951-1953, he spent most of his professional career with the Kraft Division of Westvaco Corporation in New York City and Charleston, SC. Harry truly enjoyed his customers, their friendship and shared interests. For over thirty years, Harry entertained Westvaco's valued customers at the Masters' Golf Tournament.
After retirement Harry was able to more fully engage in the many hobbies and pastimes he and his wife Danielle shared. He had a life-long interest in collecting and restoring art and antiques. Harry not only enjoyed playing golf, he became involved in making and repairing golf clubs. Many summer days were spent sailing or motoring along the coast of Maine. Harry looked forward to Sunday softball games at Ocean Point. One could also find Harry in the kitchen or at the grill creating one of his many specialties.
Harry will be remembered by friends and family for his wonderful sense of humor and his enjoyment and appreciation of life. Harry saw the beauty in life and the world around him.
Harry is survived by his wife of 46 years Danielle (Rambo), a sister Marny (Bremner) Green (Oakville, Ontario Canada), a son Jeffrey J. (Jan) Scruton (Pacific Palisades, CA), a daughter Sandra (Bruce) Grendell (Escondido, CA), 7 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren, 3 nephews and their families and longtime special friends Lawrence, Patricia and Mackenzie Kersen, Janice and Edward Hawkes.
Harry and Danielle would like to extend a special note of gratitude to Dr. Paul Cundey Jr. and his nurse Vicki Smith for their extraordinary professional care, comfort and concern for Harry. Special thanks also to Tri-County Hospice, especially Jennifer King and Tao... for providing such special and comforting care.
A celebration of Harry's life will be planned at a later date.
