Pastor Alex E. Williams
AIKEN, SC - Pastor Alex E. Williams returned to his heavenly home on May 19, 2015, after a valiant battle with a brief illness at the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Smart and Willie Mae Williams, his son, and his nine siblings.
His education included: Martha Schofield High School 1955; a Bachelor's Degree with honors in Biology and Chemistry from South Carolina State College 1959; a Master's Degree from Howard University 1974; and further study at Georgia State College and Kansas University.
On June 14, 1963, he and Betty Jean Owens, of Columbia were united in holy matrimony. They had three beloved children from this union, Keith, Alexis, and Kyle. Keith preceded him in death at age 24.
Pastor Williams began his 20 years of active duty in his military career as an officer in a position of leadership. He received numerous meritorious service awards including the Bronze Star with "V" Device (3 Oak Leaf Clusters) as a United States Army Officer, and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel from military active duty in 1980.
In 1980, Pastor Williams also began his ministry due to his desire to serve. He became a licensed pastor at his home church, Zion Hill Baptist Church. He served as an Associate and Assistant Pastor at three churches in Columbus, Georgia while he worked toward his ordination. He received his Certificate of Ordination at Zion Hill Baptist Church in 1983. He served as a member of the Columbus Clergymen Class, Inc. from 1984-1989.
Beginning in 1986, Pastor Williams provided leadership to the congregation at Metropolitan Baptist Church in Columbus, Georgia where he served until 1989. He then became the Pastor of Park Missionary Church in Beech Island, South Carolina. He faithfully served from 1990 - 2000 and led the congregation in the construction of a new church annex. He was a member of the Four Miles Baptist Association. He diligently worked with the youth. Finally, his last pastorate was at Simmon Ridge Baptist Church in Edgefield, South Carolina which began in 2003.
Pastor Williams has served on several boards and commissions, including an appointment by the Department of Energy to serve a six-year term on the Civilian Advisory Board at the Savannah River Site in Aiken, South Carolina. He conducted several training seminars and workshops on Human Relations. He was an avid public speaker and writer. He led the initiative in establishing the Martin Luther King Federal Holiday in Columbus, Georgia and Edgefield and Aiken, South Carolina.
Survivors include: his wife - Betty; daughter - Alexis Alston (Wayne); son - Kyle Williams (Kesha); grandchildren - Kyia Elayne, William Justin Alston, Samuel Alexander Alston, Madison Ciela Williams, and Brianna Renee Williams.
Funeral services will be held 10 AM Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at Millbrook Baptist Church, Aiken. Burial will follow in Ft Jackson National Cemetery, Columbia, SC at 2 PM.
