Benard Clements Rusche
COLUMBIA, SC - A memorial service for Benard C. Rusche will be held at 3:00pm on Thursday, May 21, 2015 at St. Andrews Baptist Church. The family will be receiving friends from 1:00pm until 3:00pm, before the memorial service, in the chapel. Mr. Rusche, 84, of Columbia, SC, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, May 18, 2015. He was born on February 18, 1931, to the late Benard and Naomi Rusche of Yazoo City, MS. He was a 1949 graduate of Yazoo City High School and a 1953 graduate of Tennessee Polytechnic University.
Shortly after graduating from college, Mr. Rusche began his career at the Savannah River Plant as a Research Manager in reactor physics and safety. He later became the Corporate Director of Health and Safety for DuPont worldwide. In his many years of government service, Mr. Rusche served as the Director of Nuclear Reactor Regulations in the NRC, the assistant secretary of the high-level nuclear waste program in the DOE, and the Chair of the SC Governor's Nuclear Advisory Council. He also directed the waste management effort of the Three Mile Island accident recovery and consulted technically for the Secretary of Energy (Jim Edwards). Mr. Rusche was also the president of his own company, MTRI Management and Technical Resources, Inc.
Mr. Rusche served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, choir member, and general church leader for most of his adult life. No love was greater than his love for his Lord Jesus Christ. Ben demonstrated that love to his wife, children, grandchildren and all those he encountered.
A lifelong athlete, Ben was a big fan of his alma maters, Holmes Junior College and Tennessee Tech, as well as Furman University, where he served as Trustee from 1969-1978. Ben instilled his love of sports in his family, especially his love of football and tennis. An avid hobbyist and explorer, Ben's passions and projects included astronomy and mechanics. His hunger for continued learning and service are a precious legacy he leaves his family.
Mr. Rusche is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Eunice Middleton Rusche who was by his side for every step of his final journey along with his daughter, Grace (Jim) Killgore of Atlanta, GA and two sons, Mark (Shelby) Rusche of Atlanta, GA and Kevin (Lennisa) Rusche of Apex, NC. Mr. Rusche will be greatly missed by his 9 grandchildren; Kristen (Will) Rohde, Kathryn Rusche, Allison Rusche, JoAna Rusche, Lydia (Jordan) Freeman, Ben (Cailin) Rusche, Joseph Rusche, Elizabeth Rusche, and Sarah Rusche and also one great-grandson, Owen Rohde, as well as numerous extended family members.
