Reverend C. Wilton Maxwell
SIMPSONVILLE - The Reverend C. Wilton Maxwell, 88, husband of Alvah Vaughn Teague Maxwell died Tuesday, May 16, 2017.
Rev. Maxwell was preceded in death by his first wife, Alice Rodgers Maxwell. The Reverend Maxwell was born August 30, 1928 in Simpsonville, SC, where he grew up and graduated from high school. He was employed in secular work until 1955 when he yielded to God's call to the ministry. He then enrolled at North Greenville Jr. College, later transferring to Furman University where he earned a B.A. degree in 1960. He did some seminary work at Erskine Theological Seminary and later received a Master of Theology degree from Luther Rice Seminary. He was ordained at the former Rock Hill Baptist Church in Greenville, SC in 1960.
Rev. Maxwell served as pastor of Cox Chapel Baptist Church, Marietta, SC, Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, Greenwood, SC, Westminster Baptist Church, Westminster, SC, and after retirement various interims, ultimately pastoring Brandon Baptist Church in Greenville, SC. He pastored for over 50 years.
Rev. Maxwell was also active in denominational leadership. He served in various leadership roles in the Abbeville and Beaverdam Associations and served two five year terms on the General Board of the South Carolina Baptist Convention. He is also listed in Who's Who in Religion.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughter, Sheryl M. Crosland and her husband, Robert B. III of Mt. Pleasant, SC; son, Ronald A. Maxwell, Sr. and his wife, Bonnie of Aiken, SC; stepdaughter, Susan Teague of Travelers Rest, SC; ten grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Saturday, May 20, 2017 from 9:00 a.m. until 10:15 a.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown with the funeral service following in the Downtown Chapel at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Brandon Baptist Church, 16 Calder Street, Greenville, SC 29611.
