Corine Waits Shealy
WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Corine Waits Shealy peacefully passed away on Thursday, February 1, 2018 at Brighton Gardens in Winston-Salem, NC. She was born on January 15, 1926 in Lexington, SC, to David Buford and Maebelle Taylor Waits and recently enjoyed her 92nd birthday with cake and ice cream. Corine grew up in Gilbert, SC with 8 brothers and sisters. She married Bernard Thompson Shealy in 1947 and they made their home in West Columbia, SC, later moving to Aiken, SC, where he was a manager for Pet Milk Company and later raised cattle on their farm. She was employed by Southern Bell for 35 years. Corine was preceded in death by Bernard in 1979, and her son, Marty Thompson Shealy in 1980. Corine was married in 1986 to Elmer Emanuel Shealy, also from Aiken, who was employed by Savannah River Plant. They enjoyed traveling with friends, calling themselves the Dirty Dozen and visited all 50 states. Corine was also preceded in death by Elmer, just three days before her passing, on January 29, 2018. She was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, except Rachel Weed of West Columbia, who survives.
Corine is survived by her son, Dr. Ronald Bernard Shealy and wife Sharon of Winston-Salem. Affectionately called "Mema" by her grandchildren and great grandchildren, she is survived by her two grandchildren, Ronald B. Shealy Jr. (Chip) and wife Elizabeth of Charleston, SC and Margaret Shealy Mickle (Lindy) and husband Lawrence Rembert (LR) of Pawleys Island, SC. Also surviving are three great-grandchildren, Jackson and Whit Shealy and Reaves Mickle.
Corine was a wonderful mother and wife and truly a beautiful person, inside and out. In addition to her immediate family, she was well loved by many friends, nieces, nephews and caregivers. She was a faithful volunteer in many capacities at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Aiken, an avid gardener and collector of yard art. Over the years she enjoyed traveling to watch the USC Gamecock's football games with Bernard and then later to the Clemson Tiger's games with Elmer. One of her greatest joys was when her family came to visit in Aiken and reminisced around the dinner table.
A family Memorial Service for Mr. and Mrs. Elmer E. Shealy will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 25 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Aiken, SC. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Brighton Gardens/Reminiscence Care at 2601 Reynolda Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27106 for their attentive and loving care.
