Dean Arthur Stoppel
AIKEN, SC - Mr. Dean Arthur Stoppel, 82, passed away on August 19, 2015 at Aiken Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Stoppel was born on August 26, 1932 in Lansing Michigan, son of the late Arthur Edward Stoppel and Leona Kotke Stoppel. He was raised in Michigan and graduated from Michigan State University.
He married his college sweetheart, Gail McKenzie Stoppel, July 12, 1956, and was stationed in Wichita, Kansas for a two year term in the army. He would regularly sing his 'army' songs to his daughters as part of their bedtime ritual bringing them great delight.
Following his time in the military, Mr. Stoppel joined the Mobil Oil Corporation and had a career of over forty years that began in Michigan. He was transferred to corporate headquarters in Manhattan, New York and lived in Stamford, Connecticut. He finally retired from Mobil Oil in Fairfax, Virginia. Following his retirement, he and his wife moved to Aiken, South Carolina and became active members of the Woodside Community and First Presbyterian Church of Aiken.
Dean was a devoted husband, father and friend who had a strong sense of order, loved to tell a good story and share a good laugh. He and Gail were active members of their church community and enjoyed travelling with friends. He loved working outdoors in his yard and garden, bird watching and appreciated the blessings of nature. He enjoyed financial management, staying current with business and politics, and was an avid crossword puzzler. A music and theater fan, Dean especially enjoyed when a brass band played a march by John Phillips Sousa.
He is survived by his sister, Carol Stoppel VanPatten of Williamston Michigan, and his loving daughters Kristin Stoppel Fleischhauer and Leslie Lynne Gordon. His extended family includes seven grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren all of whom have benefitted from his love, passion for life, and strength of character. He will be missed by his many friends and family.
A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Aiken with specifics to be announced in the near future. GEORGE FUNERAL HOME, is assisting the family.
