AIKEN, SC - Erna H.
Anderson, beloved wife of 62 years to the late William G. Anderson, died August 6, 2015 from complications of a stroke. She was 86. Surviving family members include son Bill and his wife Margaret, of Hollis, N.H., son David of New York City, son Bob of Dallas, Texas; her five grandchildren Erin, Meghan, Bryan, Chase, and Bryce, brother-in-law Albert Schafer, husband of her dear departed sister Ruth, and great-grandson Parker Anderson Berube.
Erna was born in 1928 in Brooklyn, New York. Before retiring to devote herself full time to raising her family, she was an executive secretary at Brown Brothers Harriman in New York City. When her two eldest sons went to college, she enrolled in Ramapo Community College where she earned a two year degree. While there she joined the women's college tennis team where she was a star member with teammates 30 years her junior.
Her husband Bill retired in l981 as Principal of Pomona Junior High School in Spring Valley, New York, and they returned to his birthplace in Ware, Mass. In 1992, they moved to Aiken, S.C. and lived in a home overlooking Houndslake Golf Course. In May 2014, eight months after her husband's death, Erna moved to Cumberland Village in Aiken, where she made dear friends and lived her last days happy, content and well cared for.
Erna said, "When I die, do not feel sorry for me. Say she lived a good life." Erna died on what would have been her late husband's 89th birthday.
