Guy Carlisle Heyl, Jr.
AIKEN, SC - Guy Carlisle Heyl, Jr. was born on September 23, 1929, living to celebrate his 87th birthday surrounded by family and dear friends. He passed away peacefully at home on September 29, 2016, ending his long struggle with cancer.
Dr. Heyl will be remembered for his more than 30 years as an orthopedic surgeon in his practice, Aiken Orthopedics. Graduating from the University of Virginia Medical School in 1954, he then served as a U.S. Air Force Hospital Commander for four years. He began private practice in Herscher, Illinois as a General Practitioner, later pursuing orthopedics and relocating to Aiken.
Dr. Heyl served on the vestry of St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church and on the boards of several Aiken non-profit agencies, including the Hitchcock Woods Foundation and Hopeland Gardens/Rye Patch. He was a long-time member of the Green Boundary and an avid supporter of the Aiken Steeplechase and the Augusta Masters Golf Tournament.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lynn Idleman Heyl and survived by his sister, Anne Childers (Chuck Childers) of Morrow, Georgia, his daughter, Barbara Heyl (Marion Kanour) of Nelson County, Virginia, his sons, Stephen Heyl of North Augusta, South Carolina and Doug Heyl (Jennifer Grigas) of Stockbridge, Georgia, and his beloved grandchildren, Samantha and Madison Heyl of Stockbridge, Georgia.
Funeral services will be held at St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church, Aiken, SC on Friday, October 7 at 2 PM with the Rev. Grant Wiseman officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service in the Stevenson-McClelland Building.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church, Aiken, SC, Regency Hospice, Aiken, SC or the Wounded Warrior Project.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM Thursday, October 6, 2016 at SHELLHOUSE FUNERAL HOME, INC., 924 HAYNE AVE., AIKEN, SC.
