Funeral Services for Mr. James H. Goodman, Sr., 77, of Atomic Road, Beech Island, SC, who entered into rest February 14, 2015, will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at 1 o'clock from Bethel United Methodist Church. Rev.
Eugene A. Aiken and Rev. Roland Dry officiating. Interment in St. Paul United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Mr. Goodman was a native of Lancaster, SC, having made Aiken County his home for the past 55 years. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church where he was a Sunday School Teacher, a member of the Annual Conference, the Pastor Parish Relations Committee, served as Church Historian and was a Certified Lay Speaker.
Mr. Goodman was the author of eight books: four historical novels about the original family of Granville Plantation, three books of poems and an autobiography.
Mr. Goodman was a successful businessman with a varied background in a wide range of businesses. He was President of a small progressive bank, President of a major metal fabricator, co-owner of Goodman Chevrolet and Coachmen RV, President of an Insurance and Real Estate Agency, President of a consumer finance corporation, General Manager of a large supermarket, and President of an Industrial Development Corporation.
Mr. Goodman's public, civic and religious activities include membership in over twenty organizations. He served on the Aiken County Accommodation Tax Advisory Committee, the Aiken Historical Commission, and the Aiken-Bamberg-Barnwell-Edgefield Regional Library Board. He was President of the Aiken Electric Cooperative Trust since it began. He was a former President and Secretary of the Lions Club, a former member of the Jaycees, a longtime member of the historic Beech Island Agricultural Club, which was founded in 1846 and a founding member of the Beech Island Historical Society. He served two terms on the City Council of Jackson. He was a Gideon speaker, member of the Advisory Board of the Salvation Army, Aiken Rotary Club where he was a Paul Harris Fellow, a fifty year member of the Hopewell Masonic Lodge #127 AFM and the Jamil Shrine Temple.
Mr. Goodman attended Augusta State University (Augusta College) from 1968-1970, as an adult student, and the University of South Carolina in 1977. In December of 1999, he addressed the graduating class, and was honored with an Honorary Doctorate of Humanities degree from Charleston Southern University where he served as a member of the Board of Visitors.
Mr. Goodman was preceded in death by his parents, James Edward and Annie Ruth Sawyer Goodman, a brother, Walter D. Goodman and a sister, Nettie Ruth Hall.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Emily Adams Goodman; two sons and a daughter-in-law, James Harris Goodman, Jr. and Chris and Terri Goodman, all of Jackson; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Beth and Jim Berry, Jackson; two grandchildren, Jennifer (Brian) Land and Christopher Goodman; two great-grandchildren, Stella Kathryn Land and Connor Land; three brothers, Charles (Minnie) Goodman, Aiken, Robert L. (Carolyn) Goodman, Lancaster, SC and Joseph M. (Judy) Goodman, Catawba, SC; a sister, Carol (Roland) Dry, Rock Hill, SC.
Pallbearers will be Mike Faulkenberry, Mark Pittman, Kevin Liles, Charles Goodman, Jr., Greg Barnett and Joey Greene.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home this Tuesday evening from 5 until 7.
