James William Thoma
AIKEN, SC - James William Thoma passed away in the presence of his sons and wife on December 7th, 2016 at the age of 72. Born July 6th 1944 in Sioux City, Iowa he was the son of Richard A. Thoma and Margaret Gene (Wood).
He was raised in Columbus, Ohio and graduated from Bishop Waterson High School in 1962. While in high school, he played basketball and was a standout football player. He attended the University of Cincinnati where he also played football. He married in 1966 and had three sons, James Jr., Christopher, and Matthew. He began his
career with Chemlawn in 1972. Ever the entrepreneur he opened the first Chemlawn franchise in Georgia and South Carolina in 1982. While in Aiken he divorced, and was remarried in 1993 to Mary (Watkins). He retired in 2011 and enjoyed time with his 3 sons, 9 grandchildren, 1 great granddaughter and wife. Jim was kind and exceedingly generous in life and in death. He has donated his body to The University of South Carolina School of Medicine. We pray that his spirit will live on in all those future physicians that will learn from his noble gift of body.
A small memorial service for family members will be held in conjunction with the School of Medicine at the main campus in Columbia, SC in April.
