John T. Gibbs, Jr.
Augusta, GA - Graveside Services for Mr. John T. Gibbs, Jr., 81, who entered into rest April 6, 2014, will be conducted Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock in Pineview Memorial Park. Dr. John M. Younginer, Jr. and Dr. Michael L. Cash officiating.
Mr. Gibbs was a resident of North Augusta for fifty years having made Augusta his home for the past ten years. He was a member of Trinity on the Hill United Methodist Church, former member of Grace United Methodist Church and past president and owner of Gibbs Auto Parts. Mr. Gibbs graduated from North Augusta High School where he participated in all sports and was a member of the 1949 State Championship Baseball Team. In 2013 he was inducted into the North Augusta Sports Hall of Fame. He earned a B.S. in mechanical engineering from Clemson University in 1954, where he was Captain of the Color Guard, member of the Blue Key, president of the Scabbard and Blade, president of the Executive Sergeants Club, member of the famous Senior Platoon and was the recipient of the Outstanding Cadet Award in 1954.
After graduation he served in the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers for two years and served in the Reserves for six years. Mr. Gibbs was awarded the Clint Dunagan Award for outstanding National Director of Jaycees and named Outstanding Citizen of North Augusta in 1965. He was a former member of the Augusta Golf Association, the Augusta Country Club, West Lake Country Club and was a founding member of North Augusta Country Club. As an avid golfer he was able to play many famous courses, one of his greatest memories being a hole-in-one at the Old Course at St. Andrews. Mr. Gibbs won five Club Championships at North Augusta Country Club and one Club Championship at West Lake County Club. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Arvelle Gibbs and a daughter, Angela Elaine Gibbs.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Nelle B. Gibbs; two sons, John T. Gibbs, III (Cindy) and William David Gibbs (Milla), all of Augusta, GA; a daughter, Cynthia G. Hayes, Mt. Pleasant, SC; a brother, Frank Torrance Gibbs (Sally), North Augusta, SC; a sister, Diane G. Cook (Frederick), Marietta, GA; seven grandchildren, Michael Craig Gibbs, Jr., Lauren Gibbs Dye (Parker), Katelyn Blanchard Gibbs, William David Gibbs Jr., John Thomas Gibbs, Elizabeth Gibbs Hayes and Ellen Caroline Hayes; three great-grandchildren.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Jake Anderson, G. Barry Boswell, Walter Campbell, Penny Cox, Warren Griffin, Steve McElmurray, Lloyd McNair, John Owens and William Scott. Active Pallbearers will be nephews, Frank Gibbs, Jr, Scott Gibbs, Marc Carpenter, Donald Smith, Frederick Cook, Jr, and Lance Cook.
The family will receive friends at the Graveside following the service.
