Julia Claire Bryson
AIKEN, SC - Julia Claire Bryson, 80, of Carriage Drive, Aiken, SC, widow of Oscar W. "Dub" Garner and Guy Bryson, entered into rest Wednesday, May, 6, 2015, surrounded by her family and loved ones.
She was born in Ellenton, SC on June 3, 1934 before being transplanted to New Ellenton, but has been a lifetime resident of Aiken County. She was charter member of St Paul United Methodist in New Ellenton, later becoming a member of Millbrook Baptist Church. She graduated from Aiken High School in 1952, then attended and graduated from Winthrop with a degree in Library Science.
She was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and of the Garden Club. She was a Sunday School teacher at St. Paul, and taught 5th grade in New Ellenton. She was formerly librarian at the Medical College of Georgia, USC-Aiken, as well as Kennedy Middle School, retiring as Media Specialist at Aiken High School. She always referred to herself as the "crazy librarian," that way she didn't have to explain herself, she did not believe in a quiet library. She is credited as having the first library (Aiken High) in the Aiken County School District to be fully automated, raising funds by creating the Library Patrons Club.
She is survived by her daughter, Kathleen (Gene) Farris and granddaughter, Julianne Spires of Aiken, sons, Hansford (Lisa) Bland of Newberry, and Jimmie Bland of Aiken. In addition to her children, she is survived by 2 brothers, Denton (Jo) Johnson of Graniteville, and Tillman (Anne) Johnson of Potomac Falls, VA, and her first husband Dr. James L. Bland of Aiken; grandchildren, Julianne Spires, Trey Bland, Tyler Bland, Johnny Garner,
