Emanuel Harrison
AIKEN, SC - Funeral services for Mr. Lawrence Emanuel Harrison, 66, will be held 12:00pm Saturday, December 19, 2015 at Union Baptist Church, Aiken, SC with Rev. David Williams, pastor, and Rev. Lester A. Smalls, eulogist. The Interment will follow at Jessamine Memorial Gardens, Aiken.
Mr. Lawrence Emanuel Harrison was the younger of twin boys born on May 2, 1949, in Aiken County, South Carolina, to the late Rev. Henry L. Harrison and Mrs. Alice Bell Weaver Harrison. He departed this life on December 12, 2015, at the Georgia Regents University Medical Center in Augusta, Georgia.
At an early age, he joined the Greater Young Zion Baptist Church in Augusta, Georgia and was baptized by his father who was the pastor of the church. In later years, Lawrence became a member of the Union Baptist Church in Aiken, South Carolina. An injury during his birth left him with physical limitations and he was home schooled for his first three years when he reached school age. He became able enough to attend public schools in Aiken County and graduated from Martha Schofield High School in 1967.
He received a B.A. degree from Augusta State College (now Georgia Regents University) in 1971. He was then employed with the South Carolina Department of Vocational Rehabilitation and Aiken Technical College. He was also a free-lance writer and for a number of years, wrote columns for weekly newspapers in Augusta and Aiken. He was able to achieve and succeed in spite of his physical challenges. He received special recognition for his achievements from the Columbia Section of the National Council of Negro Women.
He is predeceased by his twin brother, Cyrus. His survivors are brothers Lafayette (Easter), Greenwood, South Carolina; Alvin (Marilyn), Stone Mountain, Georgia, and Dennis (Patricia), Aiken, South Carolina. Also surviving to cherish his spirit and memory are one aunt, Dr. Alma W. Byrd, Columbia, South Carolina, and other nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Friends may call at the residence of his brother, Mr. Dennis (Patricia) Harrison, 111 Weaver St., Aiken, SC @ (803) 508-6036 or beginning 1pm Friday at the funeral home.
