Mary Ellen Redd deGeorge
HANAHAN, SC - Mary Ellen Redd deGeorge, 89, of Hanahan, SC, entered into eternal rest Thursday May 19, 2016 at her home. The relatives and friends of Mary Ellen are invited to attend her funeral services on Monday, May 23, 2016 at x o'clock at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 1150 E. Montague Ave., N. Charleston, SC 29405 (843)747-0479. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Carolina Memorial Funeral Home on Sunday, May 22, from 6 -8 pm.
Mary Ellen was born April 14, 1927 in Aiken, SC, a daughter of the late Jason T. Redd and Daisy Lee Turner Redd. She was employed by the South Carolina Forestry Commission and US Office of Price Administration until she began work as a secretary for John E. Stansfield, Esquire, in Aiken, SC. She then started in the law firm of Thurmond, Lybrand, and Simons where she worked from 1954-1964. Upon the appointment of Charles E. Simons, Jr. as a United States District Judge, she accepted the appointment as his Administrative Secretary. She served in this position for 39 years until her retirement. She then continued to work part-time for the law firm of Henderson and Salley in Aiken, SC for 5 more years.
Mrs. deGeorge was a longtime member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church where she assisted with Vacation Bible School and other activities. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and Past Worthy Matron of Queen City Chapter in Aiken SC. She later was affiliated with Hanahan Chapter 250.
Mary Ellen will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Anthony deGeorge and a sister, Ethel Woodward Hall of Aiken SC. She is survived by her daughter: Cheryl Brooks of Chesapeake, VA and her son: Anthony deGeorge, Jr (Sandy) of Denton, MD. Also, her grandson, Christopher Brooks (Kirstin) and great grandson, Austin James Brooks of Chesapeake, VA and her beloved dog, Cosmo.
The family would like to especially thank all her caregivers that have attended to her during the last year. Among those are LouRelza Monroe and Lorraine White who cared for both Mrs. and Mr. deGeorge since 2009. Over the last 18 months Ms. Debra Smith has worked as her care manager tirelessly to ensure that all her needs were met.
